Music artists talk about other artists
Posted by Jung Roe on 24/08/2020 at 23:27I think it’s always insightful to hear or read what music legends think of their peers.
Here is Bob Dylan taking about John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Looking back on it 40 to 50 some years later when we say we like McCartney or Lennon or Dylan it gets to the point where we say, “OK, which McCartney or which Lennon or which Dylan.” Their musical styles changed over time and the three did influence each other. My favorite John period is what I call his “Dylan period” which started in the Help! album and lasted through the Revolver album. I like Lennon’s other music but that time period is my favorite. With McCartney I liked when he did the R&B influenced RnR like “Long Tall Sally” but I also like his ballads too (Here, There, and Everywhere; etc.) I can’t really recall much of a Dylan influence on Paul, but maybe I just missed it…..because Lennon did “Dylan-type” music so well. For Bob……there are at least 4 Bob Dylans: The Folkie, The electric, The country music influenced Dylan, and the present. I think I like the country music influenced one. My favorite Dylan album is Blonde on Blonde with Nashville Skyline a close second. Just my 2 cents FWIW. Mike.

Hi Mike, I guess that’s also what made the Beatles and Bob Dylan so great. Their music creativity evolved and grew. So many lesser artists kept doing the same thing and eventually got left behind. Thanks for sharing, always appreciate your insight.

Thanks Jacki, it’s intriguing hearing legends talk about each other.
Here is Paul McCartney talking about John’s glasses and Buddy Holly who wore similar glasses, and why Paul admired Buddy.

The Beach Boys’ Mike Love on The Beach Boys vs. The Beatles Rivalry. Mike also talks about George Harrison.

These are all really interesting to listen to, Jung! When Brian sings and plays those bits of Beatles songs, I can almost convince myself that they’re really Beach Boys songs.

David, yeah that was really delightful to hear Brian Wilson sing a part of Hey Jude. The Beach Boys and Beatles certainly had the harmony and melody magic down. I’m sure the Beatles could have sounded great singing some of the Beach Boys stuff and vice versa.
That last part of the clip where Brian goes on to talk about when Paul played “She’s Leaving Home”, I heard a continuation of it somewhere else and Brian commented just how beautiful he thought it was and that it made his wife cry.

I am aware of one Beatles / Beach Boys collaboration, although I can’t recall whether the story was from Paul or Mike Love. During the time they were both with the maharishi, Paul played Mike a song he was working on, which was “Back in the USSR”, and Mike suggested he say something about the girls in Russia. And hence the verse with “the Ukraine girls really knock me out”.

Why talk about them when you can perform with them (but, for the record, John said the the twins are fabulous)
