Top 4 must have albums by your fave bands from the past
Posted by Jung Roe on 30/08/2020 at 23:34What do you consider to be the top 3 or 4 must have albums of your favourite bands from the past?
Rolling Stones Magazine list their top Beach Boys must have albums:
1..Beach Boys Today (1965)
2..Pet Sounds (1966)
3..Endless Summer (1974)
4..Smile Sessions (2011)
I would agree with the above, and add Surfs Up and Holland as some of their other most inspired and artistic albums after Pet Sounds.
On this day in 1971, The Beach Boys released their 17th studio album, Surf’s Up. A group effort, it received largely favorable reviews, and was their highest charting new album since 1967. Brian’s last three songs, including the title track, make it a masterpiece.
The last 3 songs from Surfs Up:
A day in the life of a tree, Beach Boys
“In this song tree is metaphor for human being. Same as the tree, we too, grow up, spend some time on the Earth and then slowly die.”

Til I Die, The Beach Boys
My favourite song on the album. The melody and harmonies are so soothing. Carries you away.
“A song where Brian Wilson pontificates on the perceived insignificance and powerlessness of the individual in the face of the vastness of the universe.”
I’m a cork on the ocean
Floating over the raging sea
How deep is the ocean?
How deep is the ocean?
I lost my way
Hey hey heyI’m a rock in a landslide
Rolling over the mountainside
How deep is the valley?
How deep is the valley?
It kills my soul
Hey hey heyI’m a leaf on a windy day
Pretty soon I’ll be blown away
How long will the wind blow?
How long will the wind blow?
OhhhhUntil I die
Until I die
These things I’ll be until I die
These things I’ll be until I die
These things I’ll be until I die -
Surf’s Up, Beach Boys
“Lyricist Van Dyke Parks. Composer Brian Wilson wrote the gorgeous score behind it, which is probably the closest America will ever get to its own Wagnerian epic.”
“Surf’s Up is a song that’s so complex in it’s beauty that it’s hard to put it into a category. It’s like a pop symphony bordering on classical with a touch of psychedelic added to it. A strange but beautiful trip on a musical journey. This song conjures up all kinds of thoughts and dreams and far away feelings. This is a true masterpiece.”

My 2 favourite tracks from Holland album:
Sail On Sailor and California Saga (California)

Great topic, Jung, and a great set of songs!
Unfortunately I can’t really contribute much to the discussion. I learned the hit songs from about 1955 to 1973 from “oldies” radio stations, and then went out and bought “greatest hits” and other compilation albums that contained a lot of these songs plus some more that I didn’t know. And in more recent years I’ve expanded my inventory via YouTube.
So in most cases I have no idea what albums my favorite songs are originally from. But I know a lot of veterans of the 60’s music scene can weigh in with some authenticity on this topic.

Thanks David. For me too, I never really owned a lot of albums other than the Beach Boys that I owned enough of to offer a meaningful list. I was fortunate enough to get some exposure to some great albums through my brother’s extensive album collection. So just naming 3 albums for any group would be challenging for me.  I had a lot of greatest hits cassettes as a teenager, Kinks, Paul McCartney and Wings, Eagles, Elton John, Bee Gees, Steve Miller Band, ZZ Top Who, Rolling Stones, Doobie Brothers, Carpenters (love those greatest hits compilations)…..etc and my brothers Beatles Blue and Red album vinyls.

Ah, yes! I bought the red album, but not the blue one. I’ve always been a much bigger fan of their earlier stuff.
I also got the “brown album” (not sure if anyone else calls it that), which has a lot of great tracks:

David, this could easily be a must have Beatles album for anyone looking for a few Beatles compilation albums to cover all their best work. What a great compilation theme. Just looking at the titles it’s rich in many of my favorite Beatles songs (And I Love Her, Girl, She’s Leaving Home, Norwegian Wood etc….) and even some new to me, still!

Hey Jung. How are you.
Let’s see The Beatles and The Who would be two easy, So I am going with the Kinks.
