    Hi Mona and Lisa
    Happy Autumn, hope you are both doing well. While I love summer and always feel the blues when it turns from summer to fall, the new season always brings some things to look forward to like Thanksgiving and Halloween, and not having to cut the grass anymore. But best of all, the MLT Club will be 2 years old! What a groovy happy milestone.  🙂

    The question I have is about the Taylor guitar used by Lisa in June. In a forum post a while back, Mona said:

    “As far as I can remember we’ve only ever used the Taylor 712ce-N in the video for June. It’s an absolutely stunning guitar!

    In Canada one of the biggest music store chains is Tom Lee Music, and they have tons of acoustic guitars, but 99% of them are Taylor brand guitars. They must have done a deal with Taylor I guess. When this pandemic situation ends, I might celebrate by getting myself a new acoustic guitar, maybe order one from ebay or buy a Taylor from Tom Lee Music. While my focus is on the piano right now, I’d like to explore guitar one day too, and at the very least it would be so awesome to have one in the house, they look so elegant and beautiful all made of wood, each with it’s own character like an acoustic piano.

    Taylors galore at Tom Lee Music in Canada

    I’m curious what your thoughts are on Taylors in general and specifically with the Taylor 712ce-N in terms of sound and playability in your experience, and how would you compare it to your other favoured acoustic guitars like the Epiphones and Martins?

    Thanks, and warmest wishes and stay groovy and safe!  🙂

    June, I just wanted you to know that I had the incredible pleasure of owning a Taylor 614CE that I absolutely loved. It was expensive, but its response was incredible. The reason I got rid of it was that a lot of the venues I was playing allowed the patrons to get fairly drunk and a number of times they almost knocked my mic back into the Taylor. So I replaced it with a responsive jumbo guitar that was significantly cheaper. But, as a guitar, it was a Cadillac and I loved it.

    Hi Jung;

    FWIW…….I have never been much of a fan of Taylor guitars.  They are technically sound and and are professionally made…….but to me the guitars don’t have “personality”.  I think Howard will remember I once called them kinda plain…….can’t remember the exact wording I used at the time…….I’m thinking “antiseptic” in order to reflect the blandness that I believe the guitar has.  I prefer the Martin or Gibson acoustics because they have a distinct sound.  Martins have that deeper mellow sound and Gibsons have more or a “jangly” sound.  Please don’t take me wrong……….Taylors are good guitars but just not for me.  Mike.

    Brian, Mike appreciate both your interesting insight, thanks!  I recall in the store some of the Taylors were quite expensive.  The only reason it was on my radar was because I saw MLT used it in June.  When the time comes for me to get a guitar, I have some sound advice to fall back on to help in deciding on one.

    Jung, I apologize for responding to your note before one of the twins. Typically, we can’t comment on a new posting until one of the girls has done so, but for some reason this one allowed my comment. Nonetheless, I did have an excellent experience with Taylor and they were great in the studio as well as on stage. Every player has their own preferences and different ways of assessing a guitar’s unique qualities. If you do choose a Taylor, I am sure you will be acquiring a wonderful instrument. Just be clear on your personal needs, capabilities as a musician and what your ultimate uses for the guitar will be.

    Well, if ever I was to embark on buying a guitar… (never say never…lol )… The criteria for me ,would be… #1… Purple-any shade #2… sizewise compatible for my wee hands, short stubby like fingers that are  somewhat now become arthtitic, short arms, #3…6-12 strings, compatible for my short body stature, affordability, ( middle ground- not top notch too expensive  but not dirt cheap crap either, in between like) #4… I’d be more inclined to buy primarily based on size/comfort/personality-looks of guitar over brand name, I have to love it from “Hello- Get Go”.. follow my gut instincts, if it speaks music to me, then that’s the one meant for me….??

    No worries Brian, I appreciate yours and Mike’s insight about the Taylor.  🙂  Maybe one day I will go back to that music store and look more closely at all those Taylors.  They have practice rooms to try out the guitars, and even saw some promotional “free lessons” if you buy a guitar there!

    Jacki, if I could have a dream piano, it would be a “red-any shade”, so I know where you’re coming from.  A red or purple piano or guitar would be pretty groovylicious.

    Hi Jacki;

    I have short stubby fingers, too.  What I have found is that a 12 string is a bit harder for me to play because of my finger situation.  You might want to start with a 6 string.  If you go electric, the Fender Strat has a relatively skinny fret board than other electrics so reaching for chords and notes are easier with fingers like ours…….but the strings are a little closer together so we would have to be more accurate with placing our fingers on the correct string.  Mike.
