My favorite John Lennon songs are all from the Beatles:
1) If I Fell
2) Several from Help! to Revolver when he picked up a little bit of Dylan. I would start listing them but would likely leave something out. It starts with ‘You’re gonna lose that girl’ and ends around ‘She Said She Said’.

Hi Mike. If I Fell is such a beautiful song, especially with MLTs voices caressing it. Feel the same way, so many great songs in their middle period from Help to Revolver indeed. Girl, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, In My Life, Run For Your Life….come to mind for me.

I am going to make this easy. All of them. The only ones I don’t like. Would be Yoko singing in it. John was a great writer and I am a word guy.

I pretty much agree with Mike’s assessment. I also like Come Together because of the clever phrasings like “got to be good-looking ’cause he’s so hard to see”.
I don’t know a lot of John’s solo stuff, but I remember hearing Woman on the radio when it was new, and thinking that it was pretty good. And I didn’t even know who John was then, so there was no possibility of confirmation bias.

I’m laughing my a off. I have seen this. The song should be renamed Go, Go, Go Yoko get out of here. You know Lennon was sued for Come Together caused it sounded like another Chuck Berry song. You Can’t Catch Me.In 1956 Chuck Berry recorded the song “You Can’t Catch Me” for the movie Rock, Rock, Rock. Lennon says he used the song as an inspiration while writing “Come Together” in 1969 for the Abby Road album. Lennon was eventually sued by Morris Levy, a music producer who owned the rights to “You Can’t Catch Me”. According to The Beatles

Joe, I hadn’t heard about that lawsuit, and I’ve always been interested in that sort of thing. Thanks for the info.
I can hear the rhythmic similarity in the two songs, with the sudden pauses on the downbeats. And of course the line “here come old flat top”.

Hey Joe, that’s an interesting article, thanks for sharing it. Can certainly feel the similarity in parts, but to call it stealing is a bit harsh. As John said, he was inspired by it. When it comes to the $$$ of course the owner to the rights to the song, Levy, will try to capitalize on it, never mind it’s Chuck Berry who is the rightful owner of the song. Would be more curious how Chuck Berry felt about it? Maybe felt more complemented that his music inspired John.

Hi Lynn, that’s a powerful song. Someone sang it in the John Lennon 80 World Wide Virtual Celebration live show yesterday.  I have to say John Lennon gets brutally honest in his songs, and expresses what he feels in his art. I listened to God and Mother, wow! Bach and Beethoven were like that, that got them in trouble in their day. John Lennon carry on that artistic rebel spirit. They seek to express the truth in their art.

The same thing happen to George with My Sweet Lord and The Chiffons He’s so fine.
George got sued on this one.
