That’s sad news.  Music world loses another one of it’s own.  From one of the video/pictures it looks like Mona and Lisa met Gerry and the Pace Makers band.

    Paul McCartney’s reaction on Twitter:

“Gerry was a mate from our early days in Liverpool.  He and his group were our biggest rivals on the local scene.  His unforgettable performances of You’ll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Cross the Mersey remain in many people’s hearts as reminders of a joyful time in British music…  My sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family.  See ya, Gerry.  I’ll always remember you with a smile.”

David, that is a very nice message from Paul McCartney.  I didn’t know Gerry was a rival to the Beatles early on.  He speaks very fond of him.  Kind words can mean so much.  I’m sure the band and Gerry’s family are quite moved by Paul’s message.

Here is a beautful song from Gerry and The Pacemakers.

Thanks for posting that song, Jung.  That and Ferry Cross the Mersey have been playing in my head almost continuously since I heard the news.

Gerry and the Pacemakers started out along a path eerily similar to the Beatles.  Both groups were from Liverpool, were in Hamburg together, and were managed by Brian Epstein and produced by George Martin beginning at about the same time.

Here’s an article that goes more into detail about the relationship between the two groups:

Merseybeat Pacemaker Gerry was rival to the Beatles
“In his early 60s he underwent a heart bypass operation (later he was fitted with a pacemaker, which, he told an interviewer, was not “funny”).”
