    Dear MonaLisa,
thanks for answering my post about the Sound of Music in Austria.
It’s surprising that people in Austria have not heard of the Sound of Music.

I have friends that spent a year in Graz in 1985 while Vera studied harpsichord.
I recently had an exchange of email with Greg…

‘Greg, I remember you saying something like…
“Salzburg wasn’t very happy about Hollywood showing up to film a movie,
but they have appreciated the tourist business ever since”.
    Do I have this correct?
Did Salzburg ever make a big to-do about being the home of “The Sound of Music”?’

“I don’t remember pronouncing that quotation about Salzburg, but I would agree with it.
The city has cashed in big time on The Sound of Music.
It’s been over fifty years; I wonder how strong the tourist draw still is.”

It’s been a long time since Greg and Vera were in Austria.
So maybe some of the different perception is due to geography and
some due to well, Your Generation.
Now ladies i’m not trying to put you down – Please don’t ask me to fade away.

But seriously – i am wondering if Rudy or Michaela spent any time in Salzburg
when they were younger, and if so if they recall Salzburg “putting on airs”
as the home of the Sound of Music.
I’m just asking. I’m not trying to cause a big sensation. (Please forgive me).

    On another topic.
If you ever get around to adding bells & whistles to Penny Lane – please, please
maintain the acoustic version and keep it available online.
    It’s just priceless.

Everybody stay strong – we all have a long way to go.

    Hi Thomas,

We’re sure Salzburg is greatly benefiting from the tourists that visit because of the movie that is so popular around the world. However, that doesn’t mean that the rest of the country knows much about it 🙂 And those who do, often quite dislike it. If you have a quick google you’ll be able to find loads of articles about this strange phenomenon: http://www.tourmycountry.com/austria/thesoundofmusic.htm

This author obviously has a lot of strong feelings about the movie but it is one of many like that and proves the point 😉

I’m sure that if you live in the city Salzburg, chances are you know about this movie. But we’ve been skiing (and living) in the county of Salzburg every winter for most of our childhood, our grandpa grew up in Salzburg, Austrians love theatre and music and movies and the countryside, yet still … we didn’t hear about this movie until we visited the United States for the very first time. Our parents included. Our friends included (the ones we asked anyway).

I now know that many people around the world view it as one of the world’s most popular films, so while I can understand the criticism Austrians and Germans would have about this movie, I too am a little baffled that this movie isn’t just disliked but also generally unknown to Austrians 🙂 It’s strange and definitely not a g-g-g-generational thing.

    Stay groovy!

In Canada, it is popular, I ‘ve always liked Julie Andrew’s, and I’ve always enjoyed the movie from the firstvtime I saw it on Walt Disney hiyr on Sundays as a kid in the 70s, I even have the VHS tape for it. I think it’s one of those preference movies, either it’s liked by many or not. Though, I too find it kind of odd that it’s not more known in Europe , as it is in Canada and USA, I guess boils down to it being a case of , “to each their own” opinions about it. I appreciated your reply Lisa.

For me Salzburg is famous because it is the birth place of Mozart, Schubert, Strauss, Haydn, and Mahler. I would love to do a music pilgrimage to Vienna and Salzburg one day, as it is where great music and the immortal music legends like Bach and Beethoven originated from, and now my absolute favourite modern music artists Mona and Lisa Wagner, from a small town just outside of Vienna! 🙂

What country in the world can boast of so much musical greatness as Austria! Well, a close second will be Liverpool England, current home place of MLT and birth place of the Beatles.
