I never knew that much about that tragedy.
Richie Valens was only 17. Holly was 23. The Bopper was 18.
What a loss.-
Hi Thomas – Fate works in mysteries ways. Dion won the toss and gave his seat to Valens. It was a tragedy to lose all that talent. Glad you enjoyed it. I learned a lot from watching it. Even thought it was a tragedy Dion tried to make it a positive. Saying the day the music survived. Have a good one my friend. Interesting that Waylon Jennings was mention I think as one of the new Crickets.

Hey Joe, that was a really insightful video. Lots of great stories there of what it was like to tour with Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and all the groups. The bus breaking down often, the bitter cold. It certainly wasn’t easy in those days traveling between cities for musicians. What a tragic story of the plane crash, and how a toss of a coin and wanting to save $36 saved Dion and sealed Richie Valens fate. The Beatles really admired Buddy Holly. Thanks for sharing that, I started watching it last week, but only got half way and saw it all just now.

Hey Jung,
Hope all is well. Yea the sad thing was why were they touring north of the United States in the dead of winter.
They should have done the South at that time of year. I heard other stories that Waylon Jennings who was playing for Holly was suppose to be on that plane and gave his seat up. Can’t prove since he is dead now.
I tend to believe Dion. Due to the fact he never talked about it until that interview. So I believe his story.I’m glad you enjoyed it. You are right about the Beatles admiring Holly which by the way is incorrect spelling of his last name. It should be Holley. His record company made a mistake on his last name. He really had a tuff time with his record label. I also wonder if he did not die. He probably would have been the next big thing. Making Elvis take a back seat. My opinion. Hell for a 18 months he wrote some of the classic of R&R and his guitar playing was excellent.

I imagine Buddy Holly would have continued into the early 60’s as one of the genre’s premier singer/songwriters, and then would have been washed away by the British invasion along with pretty much every other American rock-and-roll group besides the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons.
-
Hi David. I not sure and we will never know. But I think Holly would have done better than you think. Also The Four Seasons did not do well when the British wave came crashing in. The only one I remember making it was the Beach Boys and Chuck Berry. Now Frankie Valli did fine when he went on his own. But I could be wrong. I remember the four seasons were lost when the psychedelic age came to be. That’s when everything went south.
-
I had to look it up on Wikipedia, but Frankie Valli, mostly with the Four Seasons, had 17 top-20 U.S. hits from 1964 to 1967, in addition to four big hits pre-1964.
And yes, Buddy Holly might have prospered, but he would have had to adapt to the times as few artists were able to. As you said, Joe, we’ll never know.
-
David, They had that many. Then they belonged. In the end it was the in fighting and Vall’si daugther dying that did them in. I guess. But he did survived and was very good on his own. So what would be your favorite Seasons song. Mine would be Walk Like A Man.
-
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, Joe. The Four Seasons had a formula that just resonates with me, and any one of their hits can pop into my head at any time. At this moment I might give a slight edge to Rag Doll, but that could change tomorrow.

I’m a Waylon Jennings fan, so I do believe the story about him tossing the coin or whatever the reason for him not going on plane… Sadly others perished, had he been on there… we could wonder….f only they hadn’t flown out… we’ll never exactly know . I did read awhile back ago somewheres where Big Bopper’s son wanted to exhume his Dad’s remains to dispel the theory of gunshot on plane… Imagine if they had all survived, what kind of impact, music, would they have made, if Buddy Holl’s baby was born, would it have followed in Dad’s music footsteps … intriguing and tragic regardless….
