Nearly everybody “borrows” riffs, although Chuck Berry seems to be a favorite target. The Beach Boys ripped off Chuck Berry a couple of times. Even Bob Dylan ripped off Chuck Berry. , Paul says he’s taken stuff from classical composers too. Led Zepplin is notorious for rip offs. The Doors had to pay royalties to the Kinks because “Hello I Love You” is a ripoff of “All Day and All of the Night.” In a really extreme case John Fogerty got sued by a publisher for ripping off a CCR tune. Add to that the fact that there are only 12 notes in the chromatic scale and unless you’re playing jazz you generally don’t use all of them in the same tune, which further enhances the possibility of copying, although tempos can do a lot to change things around.

That says even more than i would say.
Maybe it’s a good thing Beethoven isn’t around anymore.

David, that’s an interesting video. I think though David Bennett’s use of the term “rip off” here is a bit harsh. Now there certainly has been blatant I am sure intentional plagiarism which should be sued, but I think in the 60s, there was just a lot of creative cross pollination going on, consciously and subconsciously. There were similar cross pollination going on between the great composers hundreds of years ago too. I think if the person who invented the wheel copyrighted it, they could have gotten awfully rich by now. 🙂

Jung, I think David B. was making the same point that you are, and that’s why he put “rip off” in quotes in the title of the video.

You are right David, he is making the same point. I misinterpreted the title.
