The 3 big hits from the album are God Only Knows, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, and Sloop John B (probably my fave Beach Boys song), but there were so many other gems that get stuck in my head when I hear the album like this one.

Interestingly May 16 is always a sad day for me and MJ as we lost our beloved dog Max 4 years ago this day, the same day Pet Sounds was released, just realized it today.

A couple of other May 16 music anniversaries I looked up:

1983: Michael Jackson unveils the “moonwalk”

    1980: release of McCartney II

1767: first public piano performance in the UK

Have you ever heard Bowie’s version? Bowie does the sultry voice so well. He had such a kool voice.

JP, no I never heard David Bowie’s version of God Only Knows. It is an interesting and kool version indeed. His deep vocals give it a character all it’s own. Thanks for sharing it.

David, 1767 falls in line with around the time the Piano was improved enough for the likes of Bach to approve, and it became a primary instrument of the big composers.

That week, here are other songs that were trending in the charts.

    UK Charts:
    1..Manfred Mann – Pretty Flamingo
    2..The Lovin Spoonful – Daydream
    3..Beach Boys – Sloop John B

    US Charts:
1..The Mamas and The Papas – Monday, Monday
    2..Young Rascals – Good Loving
    3..Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 and 35

My favorite from Pet Sounds was “Caroline No”

Love that song, Jim! I wonder whether the ending of Caroline No was the inspiration for the ending of Strawberry Fields Forever.

Here is an interesting short clip about how they got the dogs on the album at the ending of Caroline No. If Brian had his way, he would have had a horse in the recording studio too.

Speaking of dogs, have you ever heard this bluesy PInk Floyd song from 1971?

HI JP, no I haven’t heard this one before, but it’s wonderful! Seamus the hound seems to be following along with the song and adding his howls just in the right places. He has some good highs there. A doggy falsetto, and some good lows too! LOL. 🙂

Jim, oh yeah, Caroline No is another beautiful gem off the album. Some say Brian wrote that song about his first wife. It’s so rich in emotions.

I just came across this groovy Pentatonix cover of God Only Knows:

Not a fan really. My first thought when I hear them (even “live”) is always “I wonder what they really sound like under all that autotune?”

Hi David, that is an interesting Christmassy version of God Only Knows. May not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is certainly an upbeat cheery version with a healthy dose of harmonies.

Here is another fave of mine off the Pet Sounds album. Really like the effect of the rich instrumentation throughout.
That bass line really stand out.
