Guitars in “Hotel California”
Posted by Lynn T. Newcomb on 06/07/2021 at 17:35Nearly a year ago someone asked the question in the YouTube comments about which electric guitar you ( Lisa) were using. In the video you are “playing” what looks like a Yamaha acoustic, but I’m pretty sure I’m hearing an electric guitar. So what are the guitars we see and what are the guitars we hear?

Hi Lynn,
For Hotel California, what you hear and what you see has little to do with one another haha! We recorded the music video way before we had finished the recording for it as we didn’t have enough time to get it ready.
If I remember correctly, we mimed to the original recording when we filmed the video and only later matched it with our own recording. Which is why what you see and what you hear (also in terms of the guitars we used) doesn’t always match up. We had to work with what we got! So in the video I play the Nylon string Yamaha we brought on the trip, and in the studio I believe I played my very first Strat “copy” which we bought from the Austrian equivalent of Aldi. I always thought it sounded great given its price 😉

It’s a matter of the hand, not the guitar it’s holding. But yes indeed that Golden Ton sounds great.

The choreography in that Hotel California video is top notch Lisa. Watching the video, the guitar playing, singing, and the music flows and syncs so well like you recorded it all on site. Never would have thought the guitar used was a beginners. The sound track to the song sounds so great. It reminds me of that commercial, “Is it live or is it Memorex”. Perhaps way before your time! LOL.

Thank you, Lisa, for taking time to search you memory banks for this response. I knew the video was dubbed, but just out of curiosity I did a google search to see if it is possible to make an acoustic guitar sound like an electric guitar. It turns out it is possible, but you still would have needed electricity. You probably didn’t have that in the back of that old pickup truck.
I remember you (Lisa) saying something before about an instrument purchased from “Aldi” so I searched your site and found Angelo’s question from 2019 (before my time, but I spent a lot of time reading old posts late last year). Hotel California wasn’t mentioned but the guitar in question was. So thanks, Angelo, for your previous question and remembering that it was a Golden Tone.

Just an excuse to hear this one more time! Sounds so good, of course it’s the hand and finger work, but Lisa certainly created some great music with her first electric guitar.

Don Felder and Joe Walsh will be happy to hear this cover Lisa. I read where they both took some time to put that lead together. It amazes me how well you played in Hotel California and White Room….etc…..while my guitar gently weeps just to name a few.
