    Hello Mona and Lisa,

I included part of my quote when I first heard ‘I Bought Myself A Politician’ and made a reference to Roger Miller.

” Wait…what did I just hear? The more I listened, the more I loved it. MLT truly have their own signature sound. This gives a nod to Roger Miller, but it’s completely original. I’m hooked. I love the humor, clever lyrics and just melt with those amazing voices and guitars!!!”

You both have such an encyclopedic knowledge of music from the sixties, but I’m wondering what your thoughts are on Roger Miller. He is known for honky tonk songs that include humor and sarcasm. Yet, he had the versatility to cross over to pop music.

I found it interesting that in 1965, ‘King Of The Road’ hit number 1 on the UK singles, US County, and US easy listening charts. Pretty amazing to hit number 1 in the UK with the Beatles around. I also included ‘Engine Engine Number Nine’ for it’s melodic qualities.

I know American County Music isn’t your thing, but am curious to see if you think these songs might be a few hidden gems. I always love your honest responses.

    Groovily yours,

    Diana

    Hi Diana!

We have to be honest – other than the name, we didn’t know a thing about Roger Miller before you sent those song links but they were a joy to watch, especially the live one!

The American stars of the mid-60s era had their own kind of charm, there is no doubt about that, even though it was so different to what was happening over in cheeky Britain. We’ll dig in a bit more and check out some of his albums!

    Hope you’re doing great!

    Dear Diana,

    i still miss Roger Miller.

He was great friends with Ray Stevens who is still kicking around Nashville.

I think i have his greatest hits album around here somewhere.

I don’t think he was fully appreciated.

Country music was a crowded field even back then.

It just goes to show that You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd.

    Please forgive me.

Thanks for your reply Tom. I was raised on Roger Miller’s Greatest Hits. One of the few gems in my parent’s pathetic record collection.

Diana, I can’t thank you enough for the shout-out to Roger! He was definitely one of my favorites growing up. A true original – great voice and lyricist. I was hoping he might come to the attention of MLT someday. When the Twins moved to the UK I couldn’t help but think of his 1965 hit “England Swings”. What a perfect and fun Duo Session this would be for Mona and Lisa!
