  • Great musicians on customizing their guitars for the right sound

I always enjoy hearing musicians discuss how they customize their gear to get the sound or effect they are after for a song. I think be it music, sports or any art or discipline, getting insight from people at the top of their field on how they create their magic is always fascinating and inspiring.

I like how MLT mix it up and bring in new and different instruments on their songs to get the sound they are after, like in “Looking Through You” with a Banjitar, the wee little guitar in Lola, or Mona learning the accordian for “Vincent”, and Lisa honing her cello skills for “Yesterday”.

When Pete Townsend raves about a certain guitar for being really tough, I think you can take his word for it that it can take a beating.

Not music related, but this reminds me of how after 2 decades of driving around in a front heavy solid rear axle muscle car, I perfected the art of driving it in the snow, with the right Michelin performance snow and ice tires and 150 pound of cat litter in the trunk strategically over the rear wheels. It was fun being able to drive up an ice covered hilly road with good traction, going around pick up trucks, 4 X 4 jeeps and SUVs that got stuck and couldn’t make it up and seeing them in the rear view mirror as I drove up the hill and away. This while still on P245 V-Rated wide performance tires and the dual exhausts doing it’s throaty signature Mustang V8 rumble.

Hi Jung, I’m not sure if I understood the intention of your topic correctly, but maybe this contribution fits in quite well. Let’s put it this way: Great musicians who have found their right guitar sound. I find it interesting in any case.

Thanks for that Jurgen, some awesome intros, and videos like these make me want to be a musician. Rick Beatos #1 is interesting and unexpected, but somehow makes perfect sense!

After all these years, there are still so many beautiful stories around The Beatles, their music, their songs and the instruments they have used.

Thanks Jurgen, nice insight into the making of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and George Harrison. There is an interesting story of how there was a time when Paul and John in the studio were so involved working on one of their songs together, they would sometimes ignore George and not give him credit George deserved for his songwriting contribution. One day George walked into the studio with Eric Clapton to record a guitar part for While My Guitar Gently Weeps. When they saw George there with Eric, John and Paul stopped what they were doing and started paying attention and helped out on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I guess when they saw the legendary Eric Clapton with George, they felt maybe a new respect for George and they should not count him out. I think some of the nicest Beatles songs were from George like While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun, Something etc…

I think George Harrison would have been very proud of Mona and Lisa’s version of his masterpiece. Such expressive guitar sounds right from the beginning and sublime singing and harmonies.
