The year I graduated from high school (1981) The number 1 rock song:
-
For me it was I Can’t Get No Satisfaction (1965) and Every Breath You Take (1983).
A few years ago my aunt, who was 18 when I was born, told me that when she found out that she had just become an aunt she turned on the radio and danced to Get Off of My Cloud. I looked it up and learned that it was the number one song for that very week. Likewise, the top song the week I graduated high school was Flashdance… What a Feeling.
And just to dilute the prominence of the Stones here, the Beatles recorded What Goes On on the day that I was born. (I was just a few hours too late to be a Michelle baby.)

1954: The Chordettes – Mr Sandman. 1972: Don Maclean – American Pie

I agree with David. Your songs are great. Of course, “Surfin USA” is cool (the year I was born), but the number 1 pop song in 1981 was “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes. Since I can’t stand that song, I went for the number one rock song

Wow, Tom, I would swap songs with you in a heartbeat! I was absolutely obsessed with the harmonies in Mr. Sandman for a few weeks in the late 80’s.
-
April 1947 – – Heartaches by Ted Reems Orchestra (#1 for 12 weeks), ……. June 1965 Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds. I am not very familiar with Ted Reems version of “Heartaches”, absolutely love The Marcels version. Another favorite from 1947 is “The Anniversary Song” by Al Jolson
-
1951 “Too Young by Nat King Cole.
1970 Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.
I was too young in 1951 so I don’t really know that song, but I sure know Bridge Over Troubled Water! Wouldn’t you love to her the twins do it?
-
Yes, I’ve been hoping for years for MLT to do “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”, lol, we’re all on same MLT Coveers Wishlist Radar, How #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified is that!?, okay 4 AMm , time for me to finally get to sleep, menopause has made have bouts of insomnia that I’m not used to, tied in with already low thyroid, don’t make for good combo….I was never quite a night owl to begin with, I’m more of a late morning-daytime to mid evening person so these bouts of insomnia messes me up, somhat sleep pattern wise/thyroid energy wise… Good Groovy Night/ Morning ….lol….

Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1965
No. 1 “Wooly Bully” Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
Huh? I thought that was a fifties song.
After some further research it appears David is correct with the number one for 1983. We heard the Flashdance song a lot that summer. Keep in mind, FM radio was now competing with this new thing called Music Television. So every song that got played to death on MTV was played to death on FM radio.
The Police were everywhere then. They released a song that read like a stalker’s manuscript and we ate it up.
Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I’ll be watching youJP

It goes hand in hand with Roxanne. How many times did they watch her put on the red light or which dress she was wearing?

I own a Flashdance Album, a few 45s from that soundtrack/movie, I loved singing/dancing to it at the time ….lol….
Let’s see ..,1969…,Sugar-Sugar by The Archie’s and in 1988 …Orange Vrush, REM, ( I had to Google both up , as I had no clue…lol…) I would of technically graduated high school in 1987 , had I not repeated Grade 7 and I only went as as far as Grade 12 , had no desire to do Grade 13 …lol….????

Hi Diana, I think our selections could overlap as my years would be 1963 and 1981 too.
Surfin USA would be my first choice for 1963 too, so I will go with an an alternative. One of my fave Elvis songs.
-
In 1981 I bought this album by Reo Speedwagon, and Keep On Loving You was the #1 hit off the album.

Hi Jacki and Jung,
Thanks for chiming in. Jung I know we are the same age and Happy Belated Birthday Mr. 59. Crazy to think we are on the countdown to 60. However, I choose to think only positive thoughts about the future.

The 80s were my Teen & Duran Duran years, mostly …lol.. got into Glass Tiger music in around 1986-87, saw both bands in concert, Duran2 had opened for Bowie on his Spider tour, nd GT round same time, maybe both were at the Ottawa Super Ex….lol….if memory kinda serves me…lol… but I did actually meet Glass Tiger in 1989 and they’ve known me since then ….lol….I get them all laughing, wound up….lol…

Very nice idea Diana (I’ll take the top ten from my country)
„Penny Lane“ May 1967 (no wonder I had to become a Beatles fan). I was born at home on a red sofa, because my mother did not want to go to the hospital. Maybe the song was on the radio when I saw the light of day. 🙂

I finished Highschool in April / May 1987, so it must have been one of these two songs:
„Respectable“ (Mel & Kim) or maybe „You’re the voice“ (John Farnham). A song that has sadly regained its actuality. Both songs have taken turns on the first place.

Hey Jurgen,
Always happy to have you join in. Cool story about your birth. I’m not familiar with those songs. I’ll take a listen.

The number 1 song when I was born was Vaya Con Dios by Les and Marry Paul (might have been foretelling in a sense). https://img.youtube.com/vi/QqZ0Sdz_V40/hqdefault.jpg
On my graduation date the number one song was It’s Too Late by Carole King.
-
Number one rock song in 1958 was Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry.
Number one in 1977 “Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright)” by Rod Stewart.
-
For the year I was born: “Too Young” by Nat King Cole, but I like the one for the month I was born which was “How High the Moon” by Les Paul and Mary Ford.
Same for Graduation; “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies was for the year, but the one for the month I graduated was much better: “Get Back” by the Beatles w/ Billy Preston.
-
Jim, I also love “How High The Moon”. I discovered a beautiful rendition by Pat Suzuki that was played in the movie “Biloxi Blues”. Let me know what you think.
