The enchanting summer
Posted by Jung Roe on 26/06/2022 at 23:33What songs do you start craving as the long enchanting summer days fall upon us?
In western Canada it’s been a very slow start to the summer as we just came out of the rainiest and coolest May and June on record, quite the contrast from last years historic “heat dome” where it felt like Palm Springs California.
This weekend we finally had weather into the 30s (32C right now as I post this at 3:30PM). Went for some walks this weekend, and loved that enchanting feel of summer, rose gardens, the sweet smell of spring/summer in the air, and songbirds in the sky…

I don’t know why, but this one fills me with a summer mood.

John Lennon said the Beach Boys use their vocals like an instrument, and I can see what he means. It’s a break up song, where the warmth of the sun provides some consolation.

Another real enchanting aspect of summer as a result of the nice weather are the roses and cherry blossoms everywhere, and tulips in the spring. Just walking around my neighborhood in the summer you see so many roses in peoples gardens everywhere, as well as many rose gardens around the city. Love the smell of roses.
For the green thumb gardeners here, here are some fun facts about roses:
Roses are the most meaningful and symbolic of all flowers with a sense of mystique about them.
A rose’s symbolism varies by the color of the rose and how many roses are given.
Red roses symbolize love and romance and are the perfect Valentine’s Day rose.
Pink roses symbolize gratitude, grace, admiration, and joy.
Orange roses symbolize enthusiasm and passion.
Yellow roses symbolize friendship.
White roses symbolize innocence and purity.
There is also meaning in the number of roses you give someone.
One rose symbolizes love at first sight.
Two roses symbolize shared and deep love.
Three roses says “I love you”.
Six roses says “I want to be yours”.
Seven roses says “I’m infatuated with you”.
Nine roses symbolize eternal love.
Ten roses says “You’re perfect”.
There is a spiritual aspect with Roses. A good friend of mine once told me the smell of roses is the scent of God, and she gave me a Rosary made of dried rose petals with the scent of roses.
I learned the smell of roses is known as “The Odor of Sanctity. The divinely sweet scent of the odor of sanctity was deemed to constitute a foretaste of heaven. Angels shared the perfumed nature of heaven.” The smell of roses when there are no rose flowers present is a sign of the presence of divinity.
Bette Midlers “The Rose” always touches me by it’s beautiful melody and lyrics.

I have discovered my love for daylilies. Not as noble as roses, but each blossom (which blooms only one day) as painted. Wonderful.

Summer has already arrived for us. May and June were sometimes very hot and much too dry. Sometimes up to 32 °C (89.6 °F), in the south and east even up to 38 °C (100.4 °F). Pretty hot for Middle Europe. But it’s still very nice if you can sit outside in a t-shirt and shorts for a long time in the evening.

Jurgen, we have lots of daylilies here I’ve seen. I didn’t know what they were called, but now I do. They look like real summer flowers with the nice yellow and orange.
I haven’t heard My Love Is Like a Red Red Rose before, very beautiful and sweet. Has an Irish/Celtic feel to it.
Hot Time Summer In The City is one of the best summer songs from the 60s I think, and probably my favourite Lovin Spoonful songs. Thanks for sharing these.

A song about a beautiful “rose”, which can be found only in a very special place:

That’s beautiful Jurgen, nice find, didn’t anticipate Spanish Harlem was a about a rose. Thanks
While on the subject of roses, very occasionally in a rose garden I come across a black rose that always intrigued me. Apparently the black rose is considered to be one of the most beautiful of roses, and I agree. It symbolizes rebirth or beginning of a new chapter in a person’s life and is given when someone starts a new job, or celebrates a special anniversary, or it can signify the end of a significant event, and depending on what that is, can be bittersweet. The black rose can demonstrate to a person that you hope everything works out for the best and provide them with strength.
Black roses are loved for their mysterious yet elegant appearance. The black rose is an extremely rare color but offers unrivaled beauty. Black roses aren’t exactly black. Instead, black roses derive their color from intense shades of purple or red rather than pure black. Black roses are an aesthetically pleasing flower that can add a gothic yet gorgeous element to your garden, home, or venue.

Hi Jung, I love “All Summer Long” by Kid Rock (too risque for this place). I’ve always loved “Summer Breeze” by Seals and Croft

Hi Diana, I love this tune. Forgot all about it, but it certainly captures that wonderful summer feel like no other. Thanks.
