What’s your opinion on artists changing or keeping the male-female references used in the original recordings? In Please Please Me, the Twins change girl to boy. It distracted me the first few times I listened but now I’m glad they did. Having a different reference point makes the song seem fresh. But overall, my preference is to leave it the way it was originally written. I Saw Him Standing There hinders the listening experience for me for reasons I don’t understand.
A close friend of mine is just the opposite. She hates all the female to female expressions of love. She’s not anti-lesbian but just feels the songs aren’t authentic if you have non-lesbian women singing songs of love to women. I don’t know why but I don’t translate the Twins version of I Saw Her Standing There in any kind of lesbian way. They are just being true to the original lyrical interpretation.
Your Song is an example of a man I know to be gay singing a beautiful love song yet I always see the person it’s being sung to as female. Perhaps knowing that Bernie, who wrote the lyrics, isn’t gay or not knowing Elton was gay until years after I heard the song is responsible for that.
Anyway- any thoughts on this pretty unimportant question?

I think you’re overanalysing here Tim. The Twins have already told us they don’t change the gender of the originals unless they feel it necessary. They like to stay true to the originals as much as possible. If it suits the Twins, it suits me too. They know know much better than me about these things!

It doesn’t bother me at all, I get what they’re doing.
