When you come up with a clever idea for a lyric that you can’t immediately place into a song that you’re currently working on, how do you record it?  Do you write it down on paper?  Speak it into a device?  Type it into a file?  Or do you just let it roam around in your head until you find a home for it?

    Hi David,

All of the above! I have a word document on my computer, a “notes” file and several voice memos on my phone, an actual notepad in my desk drawer and a few phrases floating in my head. I use whatever is closest to me at the time of the idea 🙂

The “I’ll remember the line in my head” approach is definitely the riskiest one and usually gets overwritten by something like “I need to pick up milk from the store”.

I’m pretty sure Lisa and Dad work the same. Neither of us are organised enough to have everything stored in one place, haha!

I hope you’re well and thanks for the question!

Thank you, Mona.  I’ll be looking forward to that eventual worst-case-scenario composition where you sing your grocery list.

David…like Mona, Lisa, Papa Rudi …I write my poetry  on paper with pen, napkins, paper scrapes, notepad app on my Android  phone/tablet, my ancient netbook, notebooks…I’ve lost a far share of awesome poems while on bus, etc because I didn’t  have something handy to write it down atvtime it came to my head (back in days pre internet/smartphones,etc), now I jot on my phone/tablet,  paper scraps if a poem idea occurs while I’m out n about…. Great Q to have asked, Loved Mona’s reply….  I actually  did use a napkin once literally to write down a 50th or 60th Wedding Anniversary poem that came to me  while I was at a celebration for the said couple’s 50th or 60th …I had to write it out before  I forgot then read it after jotted down, the couple and everyone else in awe as to how I managed to conjure up a special perfect poem to commemorate  the Milestone anniversary as I had done, one lady was in tears as she heard me read it, don’t worry,  I properly wrote it up in good, framed it to gift to the couple…..????

I wish there was a trick to save your dream thoughts.  I had a dream the other morning about something brilliant to post here, but when I woke up I forgot it all 🙂 , and it gnawed at me all day.

Oh the irony of the magnificence of the human mind and its pathetic fragility. I often use the excuse that actually I’m a bloody genius, its just that I can’t remember…
