1967, what a year of music
Posted by Jung Roe on 11/04/2022 at 06:48The latest What’s On The Table featuring Cream and album Disraelie made me delve a little into that year of music, and it certainly I think could go down as one of the biggest years of the 60s decade for music. The Beatles released Sargent Peppers…..
What are some of your favourite songs released in 1967?
I can think of several great 67 songs MLT covered like this one, my introduction to Mona and Lisa and one of my faves from 1967, actually one of my absolute favourites from the 60s period. MLT version is the best San Francisco bar none, it’s so heavenly.

Gotta love Jefferson Airplane
-
I like the MLT cover better than the original (most of the time)

Diana, I didn’t know Friday On My Mind was from 1967, a great song, and I think the MLT version both at the Cavern, and their performance while in Austria is better than the original.

For me 1967 is the peak year of pop music: the Monterey Pop Festival, the Summer of Love, etc. So much creativity and exuberance! I could probably list a hundred songs from that year that I love, but I’ll start with one that I don’t think has come up here before:
-
I love The 5th Dimension. Marilyn McCoo is one of my favorite vocalists.
-
Me too, Diana. I enjoyed being able to post two of their songs a year or two ago when for some reason we were trying to come up with songs with “bell” in the title.
-
I pretty much love all of their music. A couple of my favorites are “Love’s Lines, Angles And Rhymes” and “If I Could Reach You”
-
David, Diana “Never My Love”, and “Up, Up and Away” are such beautiful and uplifting songs!
-
Jung, I totally agree. I also love the 5th Dimension rendition of “Never My Love”

The Balloon song…love that one…. ah, 1967, 2 yrs before I came into the world … um, well, I’m going to say perhaps Mamas and Papas, Dusty Springfield, had some stuff going on musically that year too….and a slewhold of many others….Indeed 1967… Musicwise…A year it was definitely ☮????????

Jacki, this beautiful ballad was the Mamas and Papas big hit from that year.
-
Jacki would know better than I, but I think this is just about the only time we ever got to hear Michelle’s solo singing voice.

I love how the vocals and the instrumentation are woven together in this one:
-
Can’t forget these guys:

You Bandits!
Diana beat me to White Rabbit and David H. beat me to How Can I Be Sure.
Nice job
The Woodstock version of White Rabbit

I love that version. I knew that Grace Slick was going to spike Richard Nixon’s drink with LSD when she was invited to the White House. What I didn’t know….Grace and Nixon’s daughter Tricia went to the same college and the invitation came from her. Grace used her real name Grace Barnett Wing and almost got in. The only problem was she brought Abbie Hoffman with her and they were denied entrance because of him.

Hi Everyone, wow awesome songs, thanks so much for all the input.
Diana, Tom, Jefferson Airplane was very psychedelic, and it seems 67 brought forth a lot of psychedelic songs. Even the Beach Boys with their Wild Honey album were into it. Critics called their album Psychedelic Soul, with Stevie Wonder influence. Here is a track from that Psychedelic album I like:
-
I can feel the Stevie Wonder influence in this one.
-
I’ve never heard that Beach Boys song (Let The Wind Blow) before. Trippy
-
Hi Diana, here is another one I like off that Wild Honey album. Can you tell the Beatles Sargent Peppers album influence here? “Darlin” was the only hit off the album, but I think “As The Wind Blows”, and “Country Air” could have been too.

Hi David, a couple great gems from The Rascals and The Hollies. Thanks!
Here is one I think you will know well, in fact it is one of the biggest hits of 1967 according to some critics. Lisa does an awesome job on the lead vocals, so rich and powerful, and Mona is right there with her with the backing vocals, and the guitar works on point!

Jung, I was so elated to see MLT cover a Monkees song! If they ever do another, I hope it’s Pleasant Valley Sunday (also from 1967). I love the electric guitar riff at the beginning (actually played by Michael Nesmith and not a session guy), the chaotic ending, and the non-standard lyrical topic:
-
You’ve opened my eyes to the Monkees, David. They are amazing musicians and song writers.

-
Another great 1967 Turtles song:
-
-
This one always gets deep inside me.
-
-
Oh yeah, another great one Diana. Brown Eyed Girl is one of my faves! Thanks

Any Vikki Carr fans? This album was in my parents very limited record collection. They thought the Beatles were a bunch of crazy hippies. So I grew up listening to show tunes, Vikki Carr, Roger Miller and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
-
Diana, I haven’t heard of Vicki Carr before, but Roger Miller and Herb Albert yes. This reminds me of my parents back then liked Tom Jones and bought a number of his albums and use to watch his TV musical show all the time.
