a single dad with two girls with two colored wigs
Hi Mona and Lisa,
I just realized this intro page was here. I’ve met some nice people to discuss meaningless Beatle trivia with, iow ‘my kinda people’. But I hope they understand I’m not writing in a general format here open for everyone to respond to but Mona and Lisa. Some of this—nevermind–Ya’ll will understand because, Mona and Lisa, you have helped change one of my daughters life in an amazing way.
I was raised by musicians as well. Mom and Dad and a lot of other musician friends built on to our garage to have a maybe 60 seater audience and stage. We were a pit stop for a long line of single singer/songwriters to travel through the states and play–then spend the night with us and move on to the next similar city playhouse or personal house concert.
Growing up in that environment, I too took to the road as I came of age. It’s a fascinating life but by the time I had two young girls–not twins unfortunately–I was happy to stop. (plus the idea of troubadouring is fading out to the internet now)
Let me skip to where I’m raising two rock and roll girls on my own now who think those Mona and Lisa girls are angels! “ARE THEY THE GRAND CHILDREN OF THE BEATLES?!” That’s Hallie talking who has high performance autism and a volume level of 11 like Spinal Tap. She’s a sweetheart.
Hallie actually graduated Kindergarten while I am coaching her how to understand and use facial expression. When she first saw a video of you girls; when it ended we were all shocked to see Hallie had a smile so big that her face didn’t have enough room on it. To make it clear–at kindergarten age she had her first smile in life hearing you two sing the Beatles. So I guess you guys and the Beatle magic is guiding her along because they’ve heard it on vinyl all their lives. (It’s my Mum’s vinyl that I’m keeping for her (wink wink nod nod)–she lives in the same neighborhood and is such a great help.
Chloe is so good with her sister. She just started Jr High. I’m obviously a child too. (and a sensitive one–I didn’t realize how sensitive until a couple of days ago)
They each have their own wig now. I’ll let you two guess what color they are. Ha!
In the meanwhile I have an acoustic trio playing the same exact songs you two are. Just 20 to 50 person coffee house gigs. Bigger venues in summer. But we’ve played a few gigs to 3 people too so I’m not bragging. I’m teaching a creative thinking and song writing workshop on a grant, but not touring while the girls are in school. Last summer was their first tour with us and they had a blast. I write the other half of our music. Hallie sang one of my songs on stage once–so that has to be a THANG every stop now. I think that her singing that one song fills over half of our tip jar. We take the door too.
TELL THE MONALISAS WE LOVE THEM!!!. To Hallie you are obviously “THE MONALISAS”. Chloe says hi as well but she’s a bit cooler about it now because of Jr. High and all. “Dad–just drop me up at this corner and I will walk the last block to school.” But of course she knows I won’t do that, but still, life’s a stage and we are all very conscious of it and it’s fun playing our cliche parts and breaking them to make life as interesting as possible.
Mona and Lisa, you are more powerful than you know.
