I hadn’t heard “Spirit of America”, Jung, until just now.  Very lovely, with a strong doo-wop feel.  It wasn’t on MY copy of Endless Summer, though.

David, you’re right, my mistake.  I must have confused it for one of my other compilation albums it appeared on.  Although the lyrics pay tribute to a famous jet test vehicle, it has the feel of a beautiful majestic anthem all over it.

John’s isolated vocals are so hauntingly beautiful.  By isolating it out that way really highlights how what a great singer he was.  John could easily do many songs justice with just his vocals and no instruments.

On that other video about the debate about who is singing, some of the Paul vocals they cite as examples and John’s vocals, it could go either way for me.  In some aspects John and Paul’s vocals do have amazing similarities.  Pulling the discussion Mona and Lisa were having about harmonies in the WOTT episode of Simon and Garfunkle, perhaps maybe the Beatles harmonies were so awesome because John and Paul had a kind of sibling like similarities in their vocals in some parts.

A Day In The Life is timeless.  If they released it today, it would not sound dated at all, but then again I guess most of the Beatles music is that way, timeless.  Thanks Joe for sharing that.  Video was really insightful.

As long as we’ve got a bit of a surf vibe going, here’s an entry into that genre from an east coast group:

David, Trade Winds sound nice, definitely have that westcoast sound.  I like that woody.  Thanks for posting.

Brian Wilson was very moved by the Beatles “She’s Leaving Home”, and he wrote a never released song inspired by it called “Where Is She”.  I can feel some similarities.  This song was released in 2013 on Beach Boys “Made In California Album”, which according to Wikipedia:

Made in California (1962–2012) is a compilation box set by the Beach Boys, released on August 27, 2013. The set, released through Capitol Records, was designed by Mark London in a form emulating a high school yearbook. The set contains six CDs with tracks that span the band’s entire career, including outtakes, demos, B-sides, rarities, alternate takes and versions, plus over 60 previously unreleased.

Yes, Jung, I hear the similarity too.  Over 60 unreleased songs… wow!

So if she left home to meet a man from the motor trade, but he doesn’t know where she is, what happened to her?

From the first time I heard “She’s Leaving Home” and the line “meeting a man from the motor trade”, I pictured a guy on a motorcycle, and in my mind the plot continued in the Shangri-Las song “Leader of the Pack”.  (“Lookoutlookoutlookoutlookout!”)

Good morning Jung, I think it’s John doing that part. It’s higher which I don’t think Paul could hit. It’s defiantly sounds John to me..

One of my favorite memories was an outdoors summer “Beach Boys” concert at a local ski resort.  The line of cars was at least 5 miles long but I was on my Goldwing.  I just cruised past them all then found an easy little parking spot very close.  Still, there was already a huge crowd and then my friend spotted her friends that had camped out overnight right in the front row.  They really put on a wonderful show and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better spot.  Summer breeze, stars and some spectacular performers playing fun, exciting music.  Loved the Beatles and the Beach Boys.

In 1996 they did one of my favorites “Don’t Worry Baby” with Lorrie Morgan.  Such a beautiful blend of all their voices.

The same year they also did “I Can Hear Music” with Kathy Troccoli.  So cool.

“Don’t Worry Baby” has always been one of my favourite Beach Boys numbers. Wilson’s falsetto lead vocals in particular, supported by the groups harmonies.

I don’t know if Mona or Lisa have ever tried to sing in falsetto, but if they did, I think this could be the perfect vehicle for them.

Hi John, thanks for sharing that outdoor Beach Boys concert moment and posting the videos.  I can just imagine how nice it must have been cruising along in your Goldwing on a warm breezy night and watching the Beach Boys.  Sounds like perfection!  The two videos Don’t Worry Baby and I Can Hear Music are beautiful.  Great to see the Beach Boys in the background too.  Your posting of Don’t Worry Baby just reminded me of a time in my early teens when my friend won a Panasonic VHS player/recorder and tethered video camera (massive clunky late 70s technology) from a 7UP bottle cap contest, and we filmed each other singing/lip syncing to Don’t Worry Baby with the music playing in the background.  I’m glad that footage never survived!  🙂  Thanks for bringing back that memory.  Amazing how music can trigger certain fond moments in the past.

In that movie Echo In the Canyon, I liked Jakob Dylan and Fiona Apple cover of In My Room.

The Beach Boys could also do country blues pretty good.  This is a remake of a Merle Haggard song, but sounds great ringing out from the Beach Boys.

Here’s a very memorable (to me) appearance of the Beach Boys on David Letterman’s show in 1994.  The guy with the long hair is Al Jardine’s son.

Yes, I like  ” Don’t  Worry Baby ” but  I recall another rendition  I like of that song I heard as a kid, but can’t recall now who it was done by.

As for Willie/Merle,  I’ll go with Merle in singing voice dept, as Willie offers up that nasal twang similarity to Bob/Neil, that makes me cringe to listen to but both are fine songwriters, in their  own rights….I will give Willie  credit on the songwriter aspect….lol
