Posted by Bill Isenberg on 09/06/2021 at 21:21When I listened to Stuck in the middle with you, it brought back great memories of 1972/73 and the beauty of this song by Mona and Lisa is they breathe new life into covers and make it their own. They pull out all the little things of these songs and take it to another level, no matter if it is a guitar riff of drum riff or vocals they know why these songs are so good and make sure they high light that part of the song so it is not lost and to remind of how great these songs were when they first came out. Vincent is another example of such beauty of singing and guitar work. I always Thought Elvis was the master of covers but Mona and Lisa have topped my list and just love when they do a cover but I also love the original music..Oh yea did I ever mention I love Count on Me from the Orange Album…..??? LOL…Mona and Lisa are the best !

It’s just amazing how many time the twins have brightened up a song that didn’t move me the 1st time.
Please forgive me for being critical but Rafferty’s more recent stuff out-shined Stuck-In-The-Middle for me. Or maybe it was played to death back then.
Cheers Bill

Hi Bill. I couldn’t agree with you more with MLT and covers they do.
To me when it comes to covers, Mona and Lisa are to classic rock and roll the equivalent to what Glenn Gould is to Bach piano (widely accepted as the greatest Bach interpreter of all time next to Bach himself), or Arthur Rubinstein is to Beethoven piano sonatas. Their interpretation is very special, and brings to life the music like none other. I can listen to a Bach piece by some of the greatest pianists, but when Glenn Gould does it, he captures the emotions in a special way like none other. There is a difference.
Mona and Lisa are exactly like that with rock and roll and everything Beatles and 60s, and pretty much every song they ever covered. One example is with Please Mr Postman. Ever since my teens, I thought Karen Carpenter did the absolute best version of that song, then recently when I rediscovered the Beatles thanks to MLT, when I heard the Beatles version I had to say, sorry Karen, John Lennon on the vocals just do it greater justice, but then one day MLT released their version from their 2016 Live at the Cavern album, and it eclipses the Beatles version. With Mona and Lisa’s incomparable harmonies and heart felt singing, John Lennon didn’t have a chance! 🙂 I could go on and on with San Francisco, God Only Knows, Nowhere Man etc….

Speaking of great MLT covers, I remember this one just coming off of a wonderful Advent Calendar Christmas celebration with MLT. There was a post in the forum a few weeks or so earlier where we talked about some of the greatest rocks songs ever, and Imagine was one of them on the list. What a wonderfully surreal experience when MLT surprised us all with this splendid Duo Session, to hear this song so beautifully interpreted by MLT. To me it was one of the greatest songs post Beatles and as good as the best of anything the Beatles did together, and MLT’s cover did it such supreme justice. It’s my go to “Imagine”, sorry John! It never sounded so good as when I heard MLTs version!

I agree Stuck in the middle with you have been played over and over again on local radio stations over the years, but when Mona and Lisa covered this song it opened up the reason why this song was so great back in 1972/73. Their cover is off the charts and the vocals, guitar riff and solo and just watching the pour their heart and soul on this cover makes it their own to me. Just watching them together is a honor and love how they are so well together and play off each other and smile so you can tell they are doing this for the love of the music and not just putting something out there.

They just make everything fresh and alive.
Everything sounds shiny and new.

Jung, I love how “Imagine” follows “Both Sides Now” on the CD. It’s a perfect placement. I hope people are still enjoying “Imagine” hundreds of years from now. I feel it is one of the most inspirational songs of our lifetime.
Two guitars , two voices, perfect. They truly captured the emotion of this song. To credit the songwriter and the performance – Musical genius.

Hi JP, yeah the placement of Imagine right next to Both Sides Now is brilliant.
With Imagine I think John Lennon was ahead of his time as an enlightened thinker. Unfortunately “Imagine” gets a bad rap by people who misinterpret the song as anti religion or anti God. I don’t think it has anything to do with personal faith and what you believe in, but rather about the insanity of what humanity has done done over the centuries, and even now in the name of religion. It has nothing to do with God and Faith when people divide, steal, cheat, hate, and murder and take part in violence in the name of religion. That’s what John was talking about I think. I agree, it is an absolute inspirational song of our times. Musical genius to John for creating it, and for Mona and Lisa for expressing it so absolutely beautifully, this and Both Sides Now too.

Jung, et al ,
Lennon spoke his mind. He tried to do it artistically.
Appeals for peace will always offend those that profit from war.
