Early versus Later
Posted by Bill Isenberg on 14/10/2020 at 02:21I think this may have been covered? So my apologies if it was, but what is the favorite of you all with the Beatles Music? Early meaning 1962 to 1965 or 1966 to 1970, For me? Early , I do like the stretch from 66 to 70, but the early ones got me and i never looked back. But then they did Get Back in 69 and to me that was saying…Hey? we can rock if you have not noticed…such a great song and John Lennons lead was off the charts……so excited to see what you all like…

I’m definitely an early Beatles person, although not quite as early as I used to be. After first hearing a good number of their songs throughout the existence of the group I thought they reached their apex with the Hard Day’s Night album, but now I’d place their peak at Rubber Soul.
It’s not a sharp dichotomy, though. It’s mostly just a matter of thinking that their earlier not-great songs were just weak, whereas their later not-great songs were simply not intended to be liked by the likes of me.

I like All eras of Beatles Music…each period they did songs during, offered a unique creative intertwining of ideas, sound, etc…not one is alike…..Variety is good…

My favourite use to be the late period of Hey Jude, Let It Be, Here Comes the Sun, but then I got Rubber Soul and Revolver and I really like their music of that period, including Help, more now with the awesome guitar riffs and melodic rock sounds. If I Needed Someone, I’m Looking Through You, Girl, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Got To Get You Into My Life, Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere, Help, Yesterday, You’re Going to Lose That Girl etc.

Now this is my opinion. You can agree or disagree.
The Beatles were a group that was always progressing pushing the envelope. If you play the first to the last album they made. The progression is amazing. There are not too many bands out there who can state that claim. It all started with Meet the Beatles and ended with Abbey Road.
I loved every phase they went through the Teenybopper era. The albums were great. I would not have wanted to see them live then. With all the mania going on. You would not be able to hear them. All those screaming girls.. No..
Then you got a taste of things to come with Help. The song itself is a masterpiece.
Then Yesterday & Today, Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Peppers were definitely the best 4 albums made in a row. Hands down. Magical Mystery Tour the music was good. The movie stunk. That was Paul’s project and he failed. The only good thing John said about it was it had the Walrus on it. This started the last phase where things were going south. There was a lot of friction within the Band. The writing was on the wall once Brian Epstein passed. A lot of fighting between Paul and the other three. It effected their music. Let it be, was a disaster. I hope you have seen this movie. Another Paul project and a lot of fighting. There a scene where Paul is telling George how to play guitar. George states he will do what every he wants him to do or will do nothing at all. They also did not want George Martin to produce this album Let It Be. Phil Spector did. The climax reached the end when Paul wanted to have Linda father John Eastman to manage the group. John, George, & Ringo wanted Alien Klein. The Stones manager at the time to managed them.
Here I thought that would be a conflict of interest with Paul wanting Eastman. My opinion. Plus I heard Paul say many times the way the Beatles worked was they all had to agree.
The one good thing that happen before the brake up. They approached George Martin and said they wanted to do one last album before they broke up. Martin said on one condition they let him produce it like the old days. So the last album was made. Abbey Road is a great album. Which shows that if the four lads stopped the fighting they were the best band on the planet. I always wonder what would have happen if they stayed together and made some more music. I almost think John might still be alive still. We shall never know.
Yea, Yea, Yea…..

A well thought out post Joseph! I tend to agree with all your points. I would love to see the new version of Let it Be. It’s supposed to show a different side to the making of the album. And don’t forget the rooftop concert which showed the boys getting back to the basics. One After 909 rocks!

Hi Michael,
How are you doing? Yea I think Billy Preston saved the day on let it be. The rooftop was amazing mini concert.
They are doing a new version of Let It Be. Interesting. Can’t wait for it to come out.
The copy I have I had to buy from Russia of all places. They never released it in the States

Hi Joe. Yeah the musical progression in the Beatles is amazing and incomparable and one of the reasons they were so great, and appealed to so many.  They never repeated themselves in music. By 1970, their musical artistic palette was so diverse like no other.  If one was stranded on a deserted island with only Beatles music, I think you would be quite fulfilled musically if you never heard any other music ever.
