Extreme musicianship
Posted by Jung Roe on 06/05/2022 at 07:34For me, extreme musicianship is when you can feel every single note played with so much feeling. Three examples come to mind for me. The magic Glenn Gould does on the keyboard on Bach’s Goldberg Variation, and David Gilmour on electric guitar with Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and Mona and Lisa on guitar in their first Duo Session acoustic version of In It For Love. Just love it!
When musicians can play with so much passion, they take you to another intangible dimension of amazing beauty and grace, like an out of body experience.
Please share any extreme musicianship moments you can think of.

You can feel the expressions in Mona and Lisa’s face as they ring out every guitar note. Love seeing those guitar strings vibrate. Love these Duo Sessions.

In this one, Lisa’s expressive guitar work is so graceful and soothing, and an accordion never sounded so sweet as when Mona plays it here. The fact Mona learned the accordion just for this and played it with so much feeling and beauty is amazing. Extreme musicianship indeed by both. The vocals are sublime.

Hi Jung,
I spontaneously think of “Highway Star” by Deep Purple (even if it expresses a completely different mood than the pieces you have chosen). It’s a song where you can almost physically feel every note and every guitar grib. I always find it impressive how Jon Lord rigorous handles the electric organ and it’s wonderful when the lead guitarist brings his own little stories into the main piece. With this song I have the feeling that the guitarist takes me into the fast lane and lets me ride along a little bit.
PS: Just like George Harrison always understood excellently to tell little musical stories within a song.

Hey Jurgen! Highway Star is awesome, thanks for sharing. About 4 minutes into that video to the end, the guitar work is incredible! Back around 1985 when I was living in Toronto I made this cassette loaded with songs like this with incredible guitar work. It had this song in there among others, reminded me of that. It’s extreme musicianship indeed on the freeway fast lane feeling the rush.

Here’s one that immediately comes to my mind, Karn Evil 9 1st Impression from Emerson, Lake & Palmer. My all time favorite Keyboard player and one of my all time favorite drummers. And Greg Lake playing his amazing bass and his vocals are superb! Sadly Keith and Greg are no longer with us…

HI Thomas, I can feel that amazing keyboard, drumming and bass, especially toward the end like a finale. Incredible musicianship! Thanks for sharing that.

One of my favourite AC/DC videos is this one from early in their career.
Right from the start you can feel Malcom Young’s incredible rhythm guitar work hypnotize you with his red Gretsch Firebird!, Then Bon Scott joins in with his awesome bag pipes, and the whole song is an impressive dual between the Young brothers incredible guitar work and Bon Scotts awesome bag pipes. Extreme musicianship!

Speaking of extremes, let’s go from AC/DC to the incredibly expressive piano work Claudio Arrau does on Beethoven’s Moonlight. This is the most moving Moonlight Sonata I think I have ever heard. No one did it better than Claudio Arrau, you can feel every delicate piano hammer striking those steel strings.

And then there is Lisa’ brilliant guitar work like this one. She makes the guitar weep with every beautiful ringing note. Truly does justice to George Harrisons masterpiece.

Hi Diana, as I was scrolling through this thread I thought of this video, too. Lisa’s playing is simply amazing. I get lost trying to follow what she’s playing while she just smiles as her fingers fly across the frets. Extreme to the max.

Hey Diana! Awesome choice,???????? love it! Never thought such improvisation could be possible on a UKE! The Mozart side of Lisa’s amazing musicianship shines here. Thanks!

Another favourite MLT guitar moment for me. Love Lisa’s guitar riff that rings out so magnificently. Mona and Lisa’s vocals are just superb too.

See Jimi Hendrix get into his guitar work at about 2:30 in. His guitar is just an extension of what is going on in his head musically.

There is something very special to see the very best of the best in their discipline do their thing.

Mona and Lisa take it to the extreme musicianship level of Hendrix and Clapton with their Club 27! Wow, those howling guitar sounds.
