In the 70s I remember these ladies were tops in everyone’s minds I think for female rock musicians!

I’ve spent the last few years focusing on female drummers (a story for another time, perhaps) and only recently started taking a closer look a female guitarists.  So I really can’t add much to this conversation.  I believe the only female guitarists I could have even named prior to discovering MLT were Joni Mitchell, Nancy Wilson, Bonnie Raitt and Joan Jett.   Of these four I’d say Wilson is my favorite, primarily because I have fond memories of listening to Heart on the radio while driving across the U.S. in the fall of ’76.  Of course, today my favorite is MLT.

In my google searches related to MLT, I discovered that MLT was on the cover of the 2018 Guitar Girl Magazine calendar (I plan to order it – I can use it in 2029).   This is probably not news to old-timer fans of MLT, But it was a surprising and pleasant find for a newbie like me.  The photo used on the Calendar can be found in the MLT photo archive (2017 This and That, third one in top row).

When I look back over all the female rock/pop artists the ones that stand out are Heart and Joan Jett with their hard rock and roll sounds, there is Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell with their beautiful singing, poetic lyrics and acoustic guitars, there was Janis Joplin with the raspy rock/blues sound, Sheryl Crow’s rock/country/blues style, and there’s Karen Carpenter, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and a whole slew of great operatic like pop singers.  They each have their unique styles and sounds and generally remain in their elements, but with MLT, they can do it all with such incredible diversity and justice.  They are not silo’d to a specific style or genre which so many groups both male and female are which is so remarkable about them, and whatever genre/style they focus on they are superb!  That is very special, and they are very Beatles like in that regards.

And I just noticed the Guitar Girl photo is their current (8/27/2020) FaceBook profile picture (I thought it looked familiar).

Wow David that is a great video of Carol Kaye.  What an impressive and prolific career as a bass player musician.  Her work stretches from some of the most iconic songs of the Beach Boys to Simon Garfunkle and many others as well as theme songs from the Brady Bunch to Hawaii 5-0 and beyond.
