Folk country
Posted by Jung Roe on 25/10/2020 at 07:25Listening to Joni Mitchell reminded me of this amazing gem that always makes my eyes a little moist. Nothing good ever lasts.

Never watched Northern Exposure and never heard of Iris DeMent. A great song Jung.
I will have to investigate Iris music.

Hey Joe, I really got into the whole Northern Exposure series back in 1990 when it first aired and watched/taped all 6 series. The final episode ended while playing this song. It was so touching!

I think Iris is better known as an accompanying vocalist.
Here with John Prine

Thanks Tom for posting those video, enjoyed them. With Iris Dement I am only familiar with Our Town, but on that John Prine video where she is singing back up, she is a great country singer. With country music I use to enjoy some Shania Twain. Some of her hit songs were more pop leaning, but she has some very good country songs.
Hi Bill, that song is so moving. For me the “town” in the song is a metaphor for those fond times in our lives, that has passed, and you miss. It brings back memories of a beautiful time, and of my parents too when they were younger and healthy.
MLT “Close To You” has the same effect on me.
“Goodbye past,
is it true that the good thing’s don’t last,
is it true that the good times have passed”. Â

Hey Jung,
It’s a nice song. I Liked the way Iris sang it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jung,
just like you said in the other post.
Music will get us through

I grew up with Country Music in the house, Johnny Cash, Patsy, Loretta, etc…. courtesy of both my parents being country music fansI own a whole whackload of Patsy stuff….lol… Dad also enjoyed , Bluegrass, Elvis, Mom liked Elvis, Beatles, big band stuff… I got exposed to a variety of music growing up, my older bros having their own music tastes, to which I got introduced to….

Hi Jacki;
If you were raised on country, then you might like a genre called country-rock. Those would be songs by Poco, Pure Prairie League and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Also, some songs by Eagles are country rock and songs by Marshall Tucker and the Outlaws are classified are country/southern rock. I discovered one band in England from the 1970s that did country rock called Unicorn and was totally surprised. There is a pocket in England that enjoys country rock……a current artist in the country rock class is Frank Walsh.
Check it out if you have some time…..
Also, under the class of trivia time and it’s a small world………I grew up 20 miles from Patsy Cline and was born in the same hospital as she was……only 20 years later. So, I guess I had little choice in the country influence on me.

Hi Mike, yes, I do enjoy Country- Rock, with those you’ve mentioned and I actually liked Vince Gill as a kid without realizing it was him singing Pure Prairie League’s big hit, ” Let Me Love You Tonight”, until years later when I became a Vince Gill fan, and found out he was in PPL and sang that song….lol…I had good ear for music as a kid…ol…I finally years ago found the PPL CD of hits with ” Let Me Love You Tonight… Thankyou for your reply Mike…If the music moves me , from get-go …I’m hooked !!

Hi Jacki;
Prior to Vince Gill being in PPL the lead singer was Craig Fuller and he wrote some good ones, too. The best one is Falling In and Out of Love/Amie. Craig basically wrote the first two PPL albums and are definitely the best ones in my opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu8v0aGOONA

Jacki, you were certainly very fortunate to have such a rich exposure to different music growing up thanks to the diverse taste in music in your family.

I saw Iris Dement live in concert at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas, USA, about a decade ago. Just happened to be in the area (beautiful by the way). Solo performance with her singing and playing guitar and piano for well over an hour. It was excellent! She is the real deal when it comes to country/folk roots and performance. She has some great albums and songs including some collaborations with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
