    Hi Mona;

    I noticed the topic about you and drums. I started out on drums many years go and then switched to rhythm guitar, too. I found there is a definite link between playing drums and rhythm guitar where playing drums in the past and now benefits playing rhythm guitar. To me it makes sense because often the rhythm guitar keeps ‘the beat’ much like the drums would. Have you found the same benefit? Mike.

    Absolutely! It undoubtedly helped to have a rhythmic/percussive background when I first picked up an acoustic guitar. In my opinion, with rhythm guitar it’s so much more important to play in a steady and dynamic way than it is to play clean chords or fancy inversions.
    Lose the beat and you lose everything, no fancy lead playing can salvage that 😉

      Hi Mona;

      Thanks for the reply!! Hope you are safe and well. The linkage happened with me too….when I was in a larger group, my wife (who plays violin/fiddle) would tell the other players during a new song that if they wanted to keep on beat to listen to Mike (me) and that my strums were always on the beat…….we didn’t and don’t have a drummer so I would use the rhythm part to keep others on the beat. Once they knew the song I would put in some fancier strumming but the four or 3 beats could still be heard. Mike.
