Got To Get You Into My Life
Posted by Diana Geertsen on 11/06/2021 at 02:39It only took me 58 years to discover this facade of a love song is about Marijuana. Am I the only one who didn’t know that?

That’s a new one on me.
I always thought it was one on McCartney’s love songs.

Got To Get You Into My Life’ was one I wrote when I had first been introduced to pot. I’d been a rather straight working-class lad but when we started to get into pot it seemed to me to be quite uplifting… I didn’t have a hard time with it and to me it was mind-expanding, literally mind-expanding.
So ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ is really a song about that, it’s not to a person, it’s actually about pot. It’s saying, I’m going to do this. This is not a bad idea. So it’s actually an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret.
Paul McCartney
This is crazy. Paul said ‘Fixing A Hole’ is about the people nagging him to stop smoking.

Hi Diana. Got to Get You Into My Life is another pioneer song from the Beatles that I think paved the way for a whole new style of music. Chicago, Little River Band, Doobie Brothers, ELO etc… I think it was the first pop song of significance that introduced the brass orchestra into pop/rock music of the 70s. When I hear this song, Chicago pops into mind immediately, but this was before Chicago came out with an album in 1969.
That is an interesting and unsuspecting inspiration behind the song, the same with Norwegian Wood, but when you are master songwriters of the caliber of the Beatles, the song takes on a life of it’s own despite the obscure inspiration behind it.

Hi Jung,
I agree that songs take on a life of their own and are in the ears and soul of the beholder.
Speaking of horns and rock, do you like the band Cake?

I may be a bit of an outlier in this crowd, but the idea of toying with my brain chemistry just for fun has never appealed to me. I’m not prudish about it; it’s just not my scene. If I needed something for pain relief, wakefulness, or other pragmatic purposes, that would be a different story.

Hi Diana. I’m not familiar with Cake, but I just watched a couple of their videos, nice! And I like their sound with some of the cool guitar riffs, and trumpet. Are those guitars a beautiful Gretsch Chet Atkins (actually he uses a variety of Gretsch guitars in songs), and a Stratocaster they are using?

Hi Jung,
This is one of my favorite Cake songs. In general, the band has a real Kinks vibe. Yes, it is probably more alternative (I love a lot of music from that genre). It also has a nice piano intro. Hope you enjoy

Hi Diana. Oh yeah, I see what you mean, a real Kinks vibe there for sure! Like it. And the piano lead in is very nice. Enjoyed it, thanks for sharing it.

Lol, I’m with David…I’m not a pot smoker,/smoker in general, never have been, nor want to be… I like my brain fried naturally… as is… organic crazy, ….lol

Music is my marijuana! I meditate with it, it is my zen and solace.

Now that we know what Diana has learned i wonder why the Doobie Brothers never covered Got-to-get-you-into-my-life.
They were pretty open about how they took the name Doobie Brothers.
But they have always maintained that the medicine was in the music.
So here we go.
