I recently returned from a vacation with one of my oldest friends. We both brought CD’s, and it was pretty much a week on the road with wall-to-wall Beatles. If you ever get the chance to punch it with a (borrowed) Porsche, at sunset, with “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey” cranked on the Bose, I highly recommend it. As I reminiscence about moment I wanted to ask: what are you listening to these days, any new discoveries?

Hahaa, that sounds absolutely perfect!! Porsche or not, I think that soundtrack would make just about any road trip better 😉

Whenever we go for a longer drive we grab a handful of albums from the CD shelf first, and on our little camping adventure last week we took along these to put on rotation:

    The Beatles – 1962-1966
    Peter Gabriel – So
Pink Martini and the Von Trapps – Dream a Little Dream
    Ben Howard – Every Kingdom
The Pretty Things – Greatest Hits

We’ve had all of these records for quite a few years but also decided that we needed to get some new CDs for the car. We love having our favourite music on something physical like CDs or vinyl.

Lisa, yeah, there is nothing like some good music when doing long road trips. Sometimes it’s the music that becomes the biggest memory of a road trip for me. Your Orange and the 2007 Live Concert CDs have been the most played in the recent years road trips. I did the big Canadian Rocky Mountain trip with The Beach Boys albums in 2008. In 1978 my dad rented a huge station wagon for a big family Rocky Mountain journey with my cousins, and me and my cousins listened to my Beach Boys cassettes the entire trip sitting in the back. To this day whenever I see my cousin, she always remembers that trip and the Beach Boys. Over the years on the many California road trips I remember U2 “Joshua Tree” album, and I use listen to a lot of Enigma (I, II, and III). One of the best was in high school, a week long field trip with the Beatles Red and Blue albums! One of the kids brought along a ghetto blaster on the school bus, was so much fun! I mentioned that one here a while ago.

I took my first airplane flight during the period when I was discovering the Beatles. At that point I knew most of the “red album” hits, but hadn’t really tapped into the “blue album” era yet.

On the flight we were given headphones and free access to several music stations, and of course I chose the Beatles station. I heard The Long and Winding Road for the first time then, and I thought the soaring orchestral arrangement was the perfect soundtrack for the majesty of looking down on the clouds from above. And that imagery has not faded with time.

Great moments on the road: During my years as a long haul trucker -an early morning blasting down a long and empty Montana mountain road as the sun rose over the horizon and “Running On Empty” by Jackson Browne was blaring in my ears.
