Brian Wilson turns 80 tomorrow, June 20th.

Here is Brian performing Sail Away with his band. He certainly keeps a large complement of musicians in his band. I believe I see Nelson Bragg on percussion; Brian Wilson band member Mona and Lisa met in 2016 at Brian’s Pet Sounds album 50th anniversary shows in London.

In honor of Brian Wilson, here is Surf’s Up considered by critics to be one of Brian’s greatest masterpieces he produced after his Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations projects. It was voted the 3rd greatest Beach Boys song after God Only Knows and Good Vibrations in the Rolling Stones Magazine Reader’s Poll. It was the centerpiece of Brian’s 1967 masterwork album “Smile”, Brian’s artistic answer to the Beatles Sargent Peppers, but was ultimately scrapped due to Brian’s mounting mental health crisis. The song was released in 1971 on a new album titled Surfs Up. It gives a glimpse into the the kind of music the unfinished “Smile” album aspired to.

How about this lineup of well-wishers?

Hi David, thanks so much for that! Wow, what a lineup of legends and celebrities honoring Brian Wilson, I found it really moving. I love his friend Al Jardine reminding Brian, “hey we will always be younger than your cousin Mike Love”! LOL. So witty!

I notice in the live concert footages from this year Brian’s singing is not like what it was even a couple years ago. I hope he keeps getting out there doing his music staying active. He did a nice album of his works on piano this year, so he still has it musically even if he can’t sing like he use to.

    Hi Jung,

I’m not as big a Beach Boys fan as you are. This is perhaps due to the fact that the Beach Boys have never gained as much popularity in our country as e.g. The Beatles or the Stones (maybe I’m wrong). That’s why I can’t make a qualified contribution now. But it’s very nice to see how much fun and joy you have with this music. Since I can’t sing very well, here’s a birthday song from someone who has already absorbed music with the mother’s milk:

PS: Hey David. You are too fast. Until I have formulated my texts here, the party is already over again. When I drop by, the lights are off and everyone goes home (even if this video is redundant now, never mind). ????

Hi Jurgen, thanks so much for posting that. It’s always so touching to see a legend respect and honor another legend like that. It’s amazing when our music heroes keep inspiring us all our lives like Paul, Ringo, Mick, Keith, Brian, Mike, AL, Bob…etc….

Here is an interesting interview from 2021 with Brian Wilson, where he talks about one of his greatest masterpieces.

“I believe God is music, so when you make music, that is God talking to you.” – Brian Wilson
