Returning back to earth after being blasted into space over Time of the Season, White Room, and You Really Got Me, I am really liking Hey Bulldog.  This is a lesser known Beatles song, but nevertheless Mona and Lisa do their magic and bring this one to life for me.

Is this a Paul McCartney creation?  I know he is a real dog lover as I recall footages of his beloved dog Martha accompanying him to many Beatles studio sessions in the 60’s, and in a very recent interview, you can see his dog romping around the living room with a toy in his mouth as they do the video interview which was so cute.

This is a Lennon composition and in my opinion one of the most underrated Beatles songs.  It deserved more exposure than being buried in the Yellow Submarine album.  There is a video on YouTube that was apparently done during the Lady Madonna sessions of this song and it’s lovely how much fun Paul and John are having.  I absolutely love it.  You should check it out.  And as far as MLT’S version of it, outstanding.  I love the song and love how well the twins did it.

Thanks Steve.  Had a look at the Hey Bulldog remastered promo video as well as the Making of…and really enjoyed it, and learned lots.  Was great to see a full in studio recording session of that song by the 4 of them, and they were having a lot of fun for sure, and loved the barking at the end.  I think it was brilliant for MLT to include their version of this forgotten masterpiece here.  I guess there is some mystery as to whether it was George or John’s guitar riffs that ultimately appears in the Beatles recording.  My gut tells me it was George since they had his red guitar out.  Any opinions?

I heard that story too and I don’t think it’s ever been really determined who actually played that solo.  I guess someone should ask Paul or Ringo while they’re still with us.  My gut says it was George but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it wasn’t actually Paul.  I’ve learned in recent years that he did a lot of the solo’s we attributed to George.  Taxman is one that comes to mind that I recently learned about.

Geoff Emerick- who was very critical of George as a guitarist in his book, “Here, There and Everywhere” said it was George. It reminds me of the work George did for John on the Imagine album. There’s a wildness to it that’s generally absent from his guitar work. As much as I love the Twins version, they didn’t quite capture that wildness, IMO.

You are right, Steve. Although George was amazing at playing the early lead stuff for the Beatles (Roll Over Beethoven, Hard Days Night) Paul was Paul- simply an amazing talent and was better at playing many of the later songs (Drive My Car, Helter Skelter). Between the 4 lads, they always got it perfect!

Well I guess we can very confidently say it wasn’t Ringo 🙂 🙂
