There are two rock/pop songs I know of where the bagpipes are used very effectively.
Paul McCartney Mull of Kintyre
-
AC DC “It’s a long way to the top”.  I always thought AC DC were inspired artists to have the vision to include bagpipes in a heavy metal song. The bagpipes is what makes this song. BTW check out Malcom Young’s red 1963 Gretsch Jet Firebird.
I wonder if one day bagpipes might make it’s way into an MLT song.

Jung, as I’m of Irish Heritage, with some Scot/English????????????? thrown in the mix, I love and enjoy bagpipes…in the 80s, the band Big Country, had a hit song, ” In A Big Country”, that featured bagpipes, at least I think it did, unless it was synthesizer sound made… anyways, my favourite part of any parade, is the bagpipe bands, always a crowd pleaser…There’s also a bagpiper that I see in summer months downtown Ottawa from time to time, whether or nitvsame person, dont know, earning a bit of busking cash…as well as babpiperscwho are there at Parliament Hill during Changing of the Guards Ceremony and of the changing of the Foot Guards at the War Memorial downtown Ottawa….I feel Celtic pride whenever I hear bagpipes…”Amazing Grace” played on bagpipes, gets me everytime or ” Danny Boy”…

Jacki, yes bagpipes have a magic to it’s sound. Whenever I hear it, it makes me stop to listen. It’s no wonder bagpipes while it originated in the UK I presume, is played all over the world. I will check out Big Country, thanks for the reference.

Hey…I’ve recently seen ads on Facebook of/about/for these….sounds like perfect thing for me….my yearning but lack of physical/hand/eye coordination/brain communication failure to take what I see/read to apply make trying to even consider playing guitar/like a pretty much impossibility, intol…just maybe…thisconcept might actually help/work, or not…lol…maybe one day, I’ll buy the cheapest one going to try it out….?
-
That looks pretty interesting Jacki. I checked on youtube and it doesn’t make any noise, just for practicing. The Jammy sticks sound like fun. Can practice and play them too. But just to practice chord fingering looks like they work fine.
-
Jung, my Scottish ancestors would roll over in their graves if they heard you claim bagpipes for the English!
It is mostly a Celtic tradition – Scots and Irish, though I have heard them played traditionally in other parts of the world.

Interesting. I think it was 12 when I got the drums. Blue Pearl but seemed like Ringo’s to me. Didn’t have any family or friends into music, so after a while, I ended up selling my drums and getting a motorcycle. I think my parents might have preferred I annoy the neighbors with my noise instead of them. The only other musical member of my family was the cat who walked across the piano to get to the window.

Hi John;
This link shows the drums used by Ringo from 1963 forward…..definitely Black Pearl or Oyster Black Pearl. https://www.ringosbeatlekits.com/

Yeah, not like mine. I had Ludwig with the same setup, but a sparkly deep blue (I think – it’s been a while).  No video or pictures to remember them by. Just memories. Amazing it has stayed with me though. I can drum along with many of the old songs – on a desk or table. I’m just still amazed watching how good Mona was at about that age – and now. Lisa too, in the video of their school performance.

Matt, point well taken! Scotland of course. 🙂 -
Like a bag pipe on Amazing Grace, or electric guitar on While My Guitar Gently Weeps, it’s amazing how a single voice of an instrument can move people so deeply. Hear how this Violin Gently Weeps and moves an entire congregation.
This is the musical perfection I believe musicians aim to achieve. Mission accomplished.
-
It’s nice sounding true, but not rousing enough to move me, lol….give me bagpipes or organ, celtic instruments, fiddle, guitar, piano, drums, in a church setting, then will I be moved, this would put me to sleep…lol..it would… it has lullaby effect, I’d prefer fast paced, lively upbeat… I prefer fiddle over violin. , just my thoughts on this. I can see how you would appreciate it, has that classical nuance to it.
-
LOL, you could be right Jacki, in the video half the congregation have their eyes closed and look like they are in sublime meditation with the music and some could be sleeping. There are the troopers, I think I would fall in this category, awake and are being moved.

Every time I think I am turning into too much of a guitar nut I look at Vince’s video on some of his guitars. He mentioned the flood in Nashville and he lost far more than I even have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2RJC0rtkrM

Mike what a great video, and Vince has some remarkable old vintage guitars there, each with a wonderful story! Really enjoy hearing people talking about their guitars and the story around them. Lucky guy to have a wife who buys him nice guitars too! 🙂  I guess he said it best about why he has so many guitars, and some of the same model/brand, because each is unique with it’s own voice! Beautiful instruments! Thanks for sharing the video.
