Athletes often refer to being “in the zone”, where everything comes together just right with no wasted effort or errors. I believe that can happen with any endeavor; songwriting included. Of your original songs, did you ever get “in the zone” and just tear one off and get it written quickly, but honestly and with satisfaction? Which one(s) and how long was the process?

We’ve written a lot of songs over the last few months where occasionally yes, the songs wrote themselves pretty easy, at least in the beginning.
Usually though, writing songs is hard work for us, but we don’t see that as a bad thing.

Even if the initial concept, chords or melody seems to come quickly and out of nowhere, getting the lyrics 100% right and trying out different arrangements until we find the one we like the most is usually not a process we like to rush in any way.

    Hi Lisa
I remember when I was a wee little lad, my dad use to tell me, Beethoven had to really work hard for his art. It didn’t come to him easily like it did for Mozart and Bach. He had to struggle for his art. His total composition output is a fraction of Mozart and Bach’s.

Mozart wrote 50 symphonies and 37 concertos. Bach wrote over 20 concertos and hundreds of Sonatas. Beethoven only wrote 9 symphonies, 6 concertos (5 for piano and 1 for violin), and 32 piano sonatas among other works, but only a fraction compared to other composers of his time.

But Beethoven is considered the greatest of all time and each one of his few symphonies, concertos, and Sonatas are considered pillars of music that eclipses all others. After Beethoven, music was considered an art form equal to paintings and literature.

I think my dad was trying to tell me something. 🙂
