login issues and mobile phone menu display
Posted by Rudolf Wagner on 13/10/2018 at 05:23Hello there, I heard that we have some performance issues on the website. I apologise for that and we are on the case.
Though we tried a rather “soft” release without heavy advertising in the beginning, to see if the website still performs well under load, it seems that there were problems with page loading speed, especially while logging in.
We also encountered some problems with scrolling down the menu on mobile phones that need to get resolved.
Please let us know if you encounter any further issues. Don’t be shy 🙂

Overall the content and performance is very good. It shows a lot of planning and care. I’ve been involved in some web page design and implementation and this one appears to be going pretty good. Thanks for the Club…..I can’t remember seeing another one quite like it.

I haven’t had any problems with the site so far and appreciate what you and your team are doing for all of us here. We really do want you to succeed and welcome any advice you may have regarding what we should or shouldn’t be doing to assist in the success of this wonderful site.
Love all your video productions Rudolf. Your recent ‘I’ll Follow the Sun’ video is up there with the best of your studio productions and it is nice to see you in action for a change, rather than on the other side of the video cam. I now know where your beautiful daughters get their adorable smiles from. Was Michaela directing the video production or is this something you manage, along with all your other contributions?

When I tried to access the “Headless On Halloween” post from the link in the video description on YouTube, I got the dreaded screen saying:
“Restricted Area:
We’re sorry! This content is only accessible to MLT Club Members.
If you’re already a member please log in and continue.”And that was despite me being already logged in (which was evident from the relevant button at the top saying “Logout”). And then, even if I logged in again (which I shouldn’t really have been asked to do), it didn’t even redirect me to the particular page I was trying to view – it redirected me to the home page, which was a bit frustrating…LOL
And I had exactly the same issue, when I tried to see the same post from the “Read more” button in the Clubhouse.
Now, after a few minutes have passed, the site already remembers that I am logged in, and it lets me see the post with no problem. But I think it should happen immediately, when we log in (or if we are already logged in), rather than having to wait several minutes. Rudi, can you please teach the cookies to remember people that are logged in right away?…LOL
Or maybe it is a problem only with my browser/computer? If the latter is somehow the case, sorry for me being a nuisance here. And keep up the great work! 😀

Thanks for telling me and thanks for helping others to find workarounds.
1. The problem with the menu on mobile displays is a problem of our WordPress theme. It is not a free but a premium theme so they should get it working. They are normally very fast at fixing things but this seems to be a bit harder to fully repair because every solution they offered so far caused other bigger problems. Our support ticket is already massive but I still hope they can get it done.
2. The main problem with the failed login is that we cannot reproduce it on our side. It is probably a caching problem. Our Web host will try a few things over the next days and asked me to report if the problem still exists. It would be very helpful if you could report back to tell me yes or no and maybe you could also find out some circumstances surrounding the problem. e.g. only on Android mobile phone with Google Chrome browser.

Rudolf,
I’ve had a problem with my login on the Firefox browser (Windows) but not on Internet Explorer. Firefox has been pretty consistent at not allowing me to login the first time but when I checked a moment ago, I had no problems.
I’m using at old version of Windows (7) so I thought that might be causing my problem. I have an Android phone and tablet that I use and haven’t had any login problems with either. I don’t know if this info is useful to you.
All things considered, everything has been amazing.

Oh, I use the Firefox browser too! (Though it’s Windows 10, not 7) I’m guessing that’s not a coincidence. Maybe the Web host should focus on making the cookies remember logins better for Firefox in particular…LOL I mean – not waste their time with testing anything else. And yes, I will try to come back in a few days (and log out and then log in again, if need be), to see if it works better, and will let you know. Thank you very much, Rudi! 🙂

I use Chrome and recently pinned the tab so it’s always there. I’ve noticed ever since when I go to access it after being away for a spell I too get that restricted area error. I log in and it opens it up in a new tab and then I find the pinned tab is now logged in. Very strange but I can live with it except I don’t understand why I have to log again. Before I pinned it I didn’t have the issue. This only started after I pinned the tab. I think the page refresh is kind of slow but that might be at my end. I learned today that after calling Century Link regarding my DSL connection dropping off now and then that they are seeing errors on my line indicating a sometimes weak signal. They’re coming out next Tuesday to hopefully fix the problem so I’ll see how the page refresh is after it’s fixed. Like I said, it’s more than likely on my end.

Very valuable data that help me to ask the software developers more intelligent questions than just “Doesn’t work”. It seems to be not so much browser related and maybe time related like a log-out after a certain time.
If anyone can reproduce the error every time, please tell me.

I am happy to report that this problem no longer exists for me – this time I was able to open each of the early access posts, without being asked to log in again 🙂
Just a note – apparently, when the problem existed, it wasn’t an issue of my login having timed out, or anything like that – as I said, back then I actually WAS logged in (that was evident by the left-most of the 3 buttons top right saying “Logout” – if I hadn’t been logged in, that one would have said “Log in”, right?) It’s just that DESPITE being logged in, the site asked me to log in again, when I tried to open that early access post. Maybe I should have tried to open the other early access posts, to test if I had the same problem with them? Sorry I didn’t think of that… Anyways, I guess it’s no longer important, since the issue hasn’t reoccurred. Thank you! And sorry, if I wasted your time with this 🙂

Rudi, I’m guessing they might have an auto log off after so much time of inactivity. Most sites that you have to log into have that. I would think if that’s the case you might be able to request they not do it but then I think it’s mostly a security thing because people are notorious (myself included) for logging into a site and walking away from the computer without logging out. So if someone is in a place with a lot of people around then you have the old, “Oh look, he’s still logged into MLT. You know he really ticked me off today so I’m going to post something really nasty and maybe they’ll terminate his account.” Believe it or not, that kind of stuff happens more than we might realize. Another thing is I have a number of Chrome extensions which also be affecting my load time. Anyhow, just

I looked up the exact numbers and that’s what I found:
The default WordPress behavior for logging a user out is to make a login session cookie that expires in 48 hours or when the browser is closed. If the “Remember Me” box is checked, WordPress will give you 14 days before forcing you to authenticate again.
Our site runs on WordPress like around 30% of all other sites on the Internet.

It seems I’m having login problems now too. Everything’s okay on my iPad Pro but my iPhone 7 Plus is now asking me to log in after I have already logged in.
