Chad & Jeremy – “Summer Song”
I can see one of those fabulous Mona and Lisa acoustic duo sessions here, can’t you?
-
Absolutely, Howard! This song has always been intertwined in my head with “A World Without Love”, so I keep forgetting that they haven’t already recorded it.
I presume that it was retitled for Australian release as “A Winter Song”.
Dick Clark appears to be losing it there at the end!

Well we’ve had some love with ‘Summer Song’, how about a radical change with ‘Summertime Blues’?
“‘Summertime Blues’ is a song co-written and recorded by American rockabilly artist Eddie Cochran. It was written by Cochran and his manager Jerry Capehart. Originally a single B-side, it was released in August 1958 and peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 29, 1958 and number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. It has been covered by many artists, including being a number-one hit for country music artist Alan Jackson, and scoring notable hits in versions by The Who, Blue Cheer and Brian Setzer, the last of whom recorded his version for the 1987 film La Bamba, where he portrayed Cochran. Jimi Hendrix performed it in concert.”

There are just simply an infinite amount of cover possibilities that MLT could do from various genres to which then to make to become their own distinctive rendition… That’s one true gift they are indeed blessed with… Versatility Vocal wise…!!!!

We all love the beautiful harmonies of the MLT. Well, how about these three young lads from the 1960s!
N.M.E. Poll Winner’s Concert 04-11-1965. The Beatles were the poll winners fro the second year in a row of course.
The Ivy League – “Funny How Love Can Be”

Thank you for uncovering this gem, Howard! I had never heard it. I love the smooth vocals going into and out of falsetto. It reminds me of both “Silence Is Golden” and “New York’s a Lonely Town”.

The Ivy League – “Running Around In Circles”

I’ve enjoyed the songs posted or referenced here. Some I hadn’t heard for years – or ever. I ran across one I had long forgotten that I’ve loved for years. It may or may not be a good cover to do, but it’s sure worthy of listening to and knowing about. It’s by Gene Clark, one of the founding members of the Byrds and previously with the New Christy Minstrels. At the first he was the primary writer for the Byrds and at least one song for the Turtles. The song is titled “Silent Crusade.” I’d been wondering about the song for years and saw Gene Clark’s name. I remembered one of the lines “Sail On” and thankfully the search led to it.

Mona and Lisa may not know birds that well, but I think they could come to grips with this one.
Snowbird – Anne Murray

Elvis did a pretty respectable version of this song too… although I really love the Anne Murray version best!

The mid sixties were big on protest songs and The Turtles were amongst them!
The Turtles – Let Me Be
Yes, I can hear a little bit of their cover of Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe” here too!

Would love to hear Mona and Lisa do a Joni Mitchell song, given Joni Mitchell is Lisa’s favorite female artist. I didn’t even realize Joni Mitchell is Canadian. I guess Canada produced it’s share of the greats.
-
I suggested this very song earlier in this thread! (I’m partial to the Judy Collins recording, though.) That’s two independent votes, so I guess that means they have to do it.
-
I guess there are so many songs here now, its bound to double or triple up. Lisa could do Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez great justice with her own remarkable vocal depth.

Joni Mitchell is so distinctive that I think it would be difficult to do many of her songs justice. Counting Crows tried with Big Yellow Taxi, although it really didn’t work for me. However, I DO think if anyone could, it would be MLT!!!

Ok, this one might be out of the 60’s era and out of the normal groove of MLT, but I can see them doing it. The tune was first written and done in 1975 by the British band “The Arrows” and then covered by others. Their version is nice but one of the covers made it famous. I love all of Mona and Lisa’s music – especially the Beatles love songs. BUT….. I think they’ve shown they can rock right up there with the best of them. Because they “love rock and roll.” Of course the song is “I Love Rock and Roll” written by Arrow’s Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker.
The most famous version of course is Joan Jett’s. Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and others that have covered it have paled in comparison. Not saying they have to ride in on Harleys – or Triumphs since they are in Britain – or dye their hair black, but I think they could do an amazing version as powerful or more than Joan Jett’s. Just a thought.
