Wow, this is pretty powerful. When bad things are happening all around you that you have no control over, your courage and integrity is yours, and you can control that, and define who you are. No one can take that away from you.

When terrible things happen, music can be the best consoler. Here is a song written by Paul McCartney for that very reason.
-
Jung, I remember Paul saying, when the album containing Little Willow came out, that the song was written for a friend who was going through a hard time. Not long after that the world learned about Linda’s cancer diagnosis, and I’ve assumed ever since that she was the “friend” he was referring to there. But apparently not!
-
The friend Paul refers to was Maureen, Ringo’s first wife, who passed away in December of 1994.
-
The Wide, Wide Land kind of hits the same emotional spot as Little Willow, doesn’t it?
-
David, Little Willow is a very heartfelt song. Songs written inspired by a specific experience are very consoling. The Wide, Wide Land is right in there, the most consoling, moving, and special song ever for me.

This song and it’s message rings especially true these times. Brilliant song writing, inspiring lyrics. It’s such a beautiful, soothing, and uplifting song. When the song starts, the guitar work feels like it is strumming on my heart strings. Mona and Lisa’s singing and the sweet melody melts away all the darkness, and fills the heart with peace and love. It’s been a stormy winter, and we could all do with some summer rain.

I like Carl Sagan’s message of the “Pale Blue Dot” in these troubling times.
“A mode of dust suspended in a sunbeam,
the earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.
Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors
so that in glory and triumph they can become the momentary
masters of a fraction of a dot.Our posturings, our imagined self importance, the delusion that we have
some privileged position in the universe are challenged by this point
of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping
cosmic dark. There is perhaps no better demonstration than the folly of human conceits
than this distant image of our tiny world. To me it underscores our
responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and
cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known. -
Hi Jung,
The Carl Sagan reading made me think of this song,”The Speck of Dust”

These lyrics portray a similar tone. The throat singer is different but it fits. I found this band when I was looking for Steely Dan covers. They are pretty kool.
JP
Beware: searching “the speck of dust” opens some very deep rabbit holes. ????????????????????
-
JP, a kool song for sure. That “throaty singer”, does add a unique vibe to the song too. Like the lyrics, fits into the Carl Sagan theme. Thanks for sharing it. I like deep rabbit holes sometimes, will see what “speck of dust” reveal in the great ether. ????
edited to add: Just found this charming song “Speck Of Dust”. Nice inspiring lyrics.

In MLT’s awesome “Questionable”, one of the interview questions asked stood out in my mind lately. “Do you believe in happenstance or fate?”
The beautiful opening scene and ending scene with the feather in Forrest Gump, makes me wonder are we all like a feather blowing in the wind, and things that happen in our lives are all just random and by by chance, or is there some meaning or purpose. This scene make me believe it is a little of both.
So that would be my answer Lisa. ????
