old music
Posted by John Leonard on 02/12/2020 at 04:59in your musical influences video you mentioned that you were not aware of the buckinghams. i am wondering if your aware of paul revere and the raiders and gary lewis and the playboys. they both had a few hits in the 60’s. some of which may be worthy of a cover. gary lewis was the son of jerry lewis. he actually was very popular but was drafted into the army and by the time he got out the music scene had passed him by.

We know a few Paul Revere and The Raiders tunes that we absolutely adore but we have yet to really dig into their catalog. It’s probably time to change that 🙂
We’ve never heard of Gary Lewis & The Playboys before but will check them out. There is still a lot of American 60’s stuff that we haven’t heard of. Obviously not everything is our cup of tea simply because it was recorded in the 60’s but it’s fun to get to know some of the bands that are lesser known here in the UK or Europe yet were huge in the States. It gives us a better understanding of the musical landscape.
Thanks for the 2 suggestions! -
hi Lisa,
Gary Lewis and the Playboys had a pretty big hit with Everybody Loves A Clown. Sort of a sad song, but yet, very meaningful.
Have a wonderful day

Gary Lewis was Jerry Lewis son. I love their song This Diamond Ring.
Great choice Rick

Hey Joseph,
This Diamond Ring ???? is a Great Choice.
I hate that they died out. They just couldn’t create the same magic when Gary’s service ended.
Most of their songs dealt with real life issues.

Yea I agree Rick, plus it was tuff on American groups to stay a float once the British Invasion started. It’s funning how the British beat us at our own game back then in the early 60,s.

I love Gary Lewis and the Playboys too! Here’s a fact about them that I didn’t know until a few weeks ago when I looked them up on Wikipedia: “The group was one of only two acts during the 1960s whose first seven releases on the Billboard Hot 100 reached that chart’s top 10 (The Lovin’ Spoonful was the other).”

Thanks Dave,
Did not know that. I will checked those songs out.

Canada had a cool 60s music scene going on , that I discovered awhile ago when I borrowed a DVD on Canadian Music Scene History, from the public library…it was interesting, got to realize names and faces to some bands of whom songs I had heard of growing up but never knew who the names were bands were of or what they looked like…lol…. Never too late to learn new things in music history????

Hi all;
Getting back to the Buckinghams………I believe all of their hit songs were about the lead singer’s girl friend and their up and down relationship. Turns out her name was Susan and one can trace the state of the relationship through the songs by the Buckinghams. Mike.
