Playing the drums
Posted by Tim Johnston on 02/03/2022 at 16:59I think all of us would love an opportunity to view a drum solo by Mona. It doesn’t need to be as long as In A Gadda Davida if you are familiar with that one. It could be a duo session instrumental. Who do I need to bribe to make that happen, and what is the bribe?

Hi Tim,
I’ve never been a huge fan of drum solos unless they somehow make sense within a piece of music. So unless there comes a point in the future where a drum solo is unavoidable I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon, sorry. 😉
I’m also not a very virtuoso drummer so it’s not like you’re missing much. I like playing what serves the songs and I feel that’s what I have become best at. There are so many impressive drummers out there which would be much more entertaining to watch 🙂
I don’t know if you’ve seen this before but may I direct you to this 14-year old drum solo from when I was 14 to make up for my disappointing reply (minute 6:12): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr7acZUaOZs
I hadn’t watched that clip in a decade but your comment reminded me of it and I just laughed out loud several times at my concentrated baby face and those “action” shots with its experimental camera angles.
Thanks for asking though 🙂

Thank you for the clip and the reply Mona. That was an impressive solo ! And don’t sell yourself short, you are a marvelous drummer on your albums, and the work you did on Songbird is outstanding!!! And when 2 or your drummer influences are Moon and Baker, that tells me you tear it up time to time on your kit. And everyone loves Baby Mona and Baby Lisa pics, more than even Baby Yoda!

I’m with Mona regarding solos, I don’t like them either. I played for years and refused to do them. Ringo by the way never liked them either. Waste of time IMHO. Not a fan of long guitar solos either. I guess they are done to give other members of the band a break but I say FORGET THAT! Play another song or two instead!

Personally I find it a treat when we get a chance to see Mona playing the drums as it does not happen often.

“Ain’t No Sunshine” was magic! Both Mona’s fantastic solo with the big smile at the end and Lisa’s soulful singing and bass playing (also Papa Rudi at the keyboard and Michaela on the sax) made it a great performance!
Also, Mona’s drumming and singing in “Twist and Shout” was classic!
Very respectful about your feeling about drum solos. Keep doing what you are doing!
