Review of White Room (Spoiler Alert)
As White Room is available for purchase on Amazon, I’m going to go ahead and review it. For those of you who would prefer to wait until they can hear the entire album- stop here!
White Room is my favorite song by Cream. It just barely beats out Sunshine of My Love but it’s a song I’ve loved since the first time I heard it 50 years ago. I don’t think it’s a very logical song for the Twins to cover. It has no chorus and lyrically, it’s difficult to get the meaning of the song. If you get it at all- which I don’t- it certainly doesn’t jump out at you. Also, it is well produced and for a song with so much edge- it has terrific vocal performances by Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton.
Cream was the original “super group.” Clapton was the best guitarist in the business besides Hendrix, Bruce had many supporters as the best bass player in the business and Ginger Baker was considered by many to be the best drummer in the business. Tackling a song by three such virtuoso instrumentalists is a very difficult thing to pull off. Clapton used a wah pedal to get the psychedelic guitar sound and it was actually voted as the second best use of it ever by Rolling Stone behind a Jimi song. The bass line by Bruce is totally unforgettable. Tough, tough song to cover!
And the Twins nail it!! I’m not going to say it’s better than the original. There are certainly things I like better about it. It has a much more modern feel to it. Lisa’s guitar- while it doesn’t quite rip the way Clapton’s do- they also don’t sound like they were produced 50 years ago in a psychedelic era. And they are extraordinarily good! The lead vocals- I think it’s Lisa but regardless- Mona or Lisa- they are amazing! The guitar solo, the bass, the drums- it’s all quite amazing! The overall feel of the song- amazing! i asked the other day how good Mona was as a drummer. This song answers that once and for all!
There really isn’t another song in the Twins catalog like this one so it has the power of expanding their sound. Although I don’t think diehard Cream fans are going to like two young women coming in and covering the work so brilliantly- I think MonaLisa fans are going to love this one for many years to come! I certainly will!
