Thanks David,
The views have doubled since this morning!

Awesome stats David, and as JP points out looks like it’s off to a good start.
May the video encircle the world and touch every corner of the planet. May it move and touch many, many souls with it’s captivating beautiful music and important message.

About 22K at the 24 hour mark. Feels pretty strong, especially for an original. I hope this portends even better things to come. Team MLT deserves it for sure!

Here are the latest top 20 lists for the current number of simultaneous views (C) and the number of views per day (V) based on a week of data from August 28th through September 3rd, along with the change in C since the last “published” survey a month ago. (Note that because the numbers for I Bought Myself a Politician are still changing rapidly, for that video I only used data for the single day of September 3rd. I may post occasional updates on that one for a while.)

Although most of the videos have numbers similar to or somewhat larger (yay!) than a month ago, a few experienced unexpectedly large jumps. (I’m looking at you, Drive My Car.) Part of that may be due to the fact that last month’s numbers were based on just one day of data, though. Since I plan to post new rankings about once a month, from now on I may average the results over that entire month rather than just a week. I’m trying to zero in on a data collection time that is long enough to smooth out random variations but short enough to track real trends in viewership.
-
That’s just awesome data David, thanks for that. Glad to see I Bought Myself a Politician doing well.
-
Ditto, Jung! You’re too good to us, David! I think you sometimes work just about as hard as team MLT. Hope you enjoy it as much as they seem to!
-
Thanks, Jung and Jeffery and JP. I don’t really have any artistic skills, so I’m hoping I can entertain with analytics. And I’m genuinely interested in exploring how awareness of MLT is evolving.
It’s actually a pretty cushy job. Once or twice a month I spend an hour or so clicking the mouse and clicking the calculator buttons, plus I put in a little overtime whenever MLT releases a new video.
If I were smart I’d enter all the raw data in a spreadsheet and let it take care of the calculations, cutting my work time in half. I’ll definitely pursue that if I ever decide to keep stats on the entire set of videos rather than just the top 20.
-
It’s obvious you enjoy what you do, or you couldn’t possibly be so thorough. To me, you bring analytics to artform level! Rock on, my friend!
-
Oh, and it looks like ‘Politcian’ is up to about 59k after one week! I can’t seem to figure how to get exact view counts. I just get Ks and Ms after reaching a certain level.
-
If you click on the video it will give you the exact number of views underneath the title.

-
You rock Dave! Thanks for compiling this. It is nice to see the unexpected spikes that occurred. I am off to watch “I’ll Follow the Sun” again.

Thanks, Dave. I generally only watch YouTube on my tv, so I still can’t find anywhere to find exact views, but I tried on my phone just now and there it was!

Just a quick update on I Bought Myself a Politician. Averaged over the past week, S = 5.7 and V = 2213. And over just the last 24 hours, S = 3.8 and V = 1462. So the numbers are experiencing the inevitable decline, but they’re holding up really well compared to some other recent releases.
I also checked up on Drive My Car and While My Guitar Gently Weeps, both of which rose significantly last month. Over the past week, DMC has S = 14.9 (wow!) and V = 7686, while WMGGW has S = 8.7 and V = 2749. So if a week is a large enough sample size to be reliable, it looks like both of these videos are indeed currently experiencing a surge in popularity.
When I do a new top 20 at the beginning of October, we’ll see whether this is part of an across-the-board increase in views, or if these two are just charmed for some reason.
-
That’s all great news David, thanks for pulling the stats. Looking forward to Octobers numbers.
-
Another IBMAP update: over the past week, C = 3.0 and V = 1159. And over the last day, C = 2.4 and V = 908. Still hanging in there!
Last week I mistakenly referred to all the C values as S values. I hope no one unloaded MLT stock over that error.

How will a fifteen-second video fare on the “charts”? At first it might seem that C would be really low, because simultaneous viewing of a very short video is inherently unlikely. But it’s the kind of video that invites repeated viewing, particularly at low speed, in order to take in all the details. So V may be surprisingly high, which in turn would give a bit of a boost to C. We’ll see!
For “The Many Faces of Mona” I’m going to try calculating C and V based on thirty-minute samples rather than the ten minutes I used for IBMAP, to try to cut down on the random variations. The numbers for V will still represent an extrapolation to 24 hours, though.
Four hours after release, S = 1.41, C = 1.15, and V = 6624. After six hours, S = 1.28, C = 1.22, and V = 7008. After eight hours, S = 1.23, C = 0.62, and V = 3552. After fifteen hours, S = 0.97, C = 0.63, and V = 3648. After eighteen hours, S = 0.90, C = 0.56, and V = 3216. After 24 hours, S = 0.84, C = 0.96, and V = 5520. Still a lot of hour-to-hour fluctuation in C and V…
At this point I’ve started running into some half-hour periods with no views at all, which I’ll omit reporting here. After 32 hours, S = 0.72, C = 0.18, and V = 1008. After 40 hours, S = 0.61, C = 0.12, and V = 672. After 52 hours, S = 0.51, C = 0.58, and V = 3360. After 56 hours, S = 0.49, C = 0.24, and V = 1392. After 70 hours, S = 0.42, C = 0.11, and V = 624. After 78 hours, S = 0.39, C = 0.41, and V = 2352. After 88 hours, S = 0.36, C = 0.28, and V = 1584. And after 100 hours, S = 0.33, C = 0.27, and V = 1536.
So it looks like the random fluctuations swamped the stats pretty much from the outset. Sometimes there were no views for half an hour, and then dozens of views in the next half an hour. I don’t know how much of this is real and how much is related to how often YouTube updates the numbers, but I’m thinking I might have to go to a sampling time of several hours, or perhaps even a day, for the early data to be meaningful.
