Good choices Diana, these two MLT ones always pulls at my heart strings. Such longing emotions.

Twice the party theme, two times heartbreak and yet: a completely different story
-
Jurgen,
I love Lesley Gore. But you can’t have an LG party without playing ‘ You Don’t Own Me’
-
I’m convinced that Lesley Gore reached into a hole in the space-time continuum and pulled out You Don’t Own Me from several decades in the future. Such a strong message for 1963! I’d love to see MLT put their spin on this song.
-
I couldn’t agree more. I can’t imagine being with someone who says “I’m the man, I’ll do all the thinking”. MLT would be awesome. I’m going to email a suggestion to see if they will do a contest where the winner gets to choose the cover song.

I’ve never heard this one before. Great idea to spin the conversation to sad parties.

I can’t believe I never noticed this before, but the Beatles repeated the vocal melody and harmony parts from the phrase “I don’t want to spoil the party, so I’ll go” EXACTLY with “‘Cause you like me too much, and I like you” in their later song “You Like Me Too Much”.

Hi Diana, what a great post. I agree. For me the songs that move me the most, are the ones that take you through sorrow and loss and return with consolation, joy, or strength and resolve. Sometimes you have to go through hell to appreciate heaven, and life I think is like that.
I never cared for this piece much, but recently it came on while I was listening to a Chopin CD that really moved me. Chopin’s “Piano Sonata no 2 in B Flat Minor 2nd movement” (aka Funeral March) expresses all the emotions that a person can go through when they lose someone/something very dear or something tragic happens. It is one of Chopin’s most beautiful piano pieces. The piece starts off with a very somber tone reflecting loss or something tragic, that is slowly transformed into an exceptionally beautiful part (at around 2:30) played in a longing minor key, a voice sings to your heart, where consolation and reflection I think is expressed and love is felt that turns to beauty, and towards the end, the somber tone comes back, as when your heart is broken, the feeling of loss and sadness never completely goes away, but it is accompanied with strength, resolve, fond memories, and love. It is so moving. In the end all you are left with is the love to embrace.
Music is such a wonderful thing, it expresses so many emotions.

Hello Jung,
I was hoping you would chime in. That Sonata is hauntingly beautiful and sad. These sad songs touch such a deep place in my soul. It makes me feel that we are not alone (even if you may feel that way at times).

Hi Diana.
In the recent “behind the scenes” Songbird video what Lisa said about the elation after you lose something and then find it again echoes what I feel in some songs that take you through loss/tragedy to joy and peace. When there is such a spectrum of emotions in a single piece of music, it really moves you. That is what Chopin’s Funeral March, and the Rose feel like, and as you say some of the most beautiful songs come from a broken heart.

In the same vein, this one always moves too.

I always liked this one, probably my fave Rolling Stones song, this or Wild Horses.

This may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Cheryl Wheeler is a singer/song writer of contemporary folk music. I’m going to post two of her songs (from the 80’s). The second post was done by Dan Seals (brother of Jim Seals from Seals and Croft). Cheryl wrote ‘Addicted’ which was a big hit for him

While we are on the subject of crying, here I have two songs that should open wide the gates of the soul: 🙂

Great songs Jurgen. Got my Kleenex. Did you know that Sonny Bono co- wrote Needles and Pins?
-
Hello Diana,
I was hoping you had your Kleenex handy. I didn’t know Sonny Bono wrote that song. It’s exciting to see that many famous songs have been composed by an even more famous “ghost writer”.

Fantastic choices, Juergen! And on the subject of unexpected songwriters, I Go to Pieces was written by Del Shannon of Runaway fame.
I hope we haven’t dehydrated you completely, Diana. There are a lot of songs that can sympathize with the need for tears.
-
Diana, you work to much.
Cheryl Wheeler and Dan Seals sang Addicted together on that same broadcast.
It’s very good.
Just a 411

Tom,
I’m so glad you are familiar with Cheryl Wheeler. I did see them sing together and thought it was such a treat to hear her sing the verse that didn’t make the final cut.
