Songs That Are Not About Love
Posted by Diana Geertsen on 10/05/2022 at 11:33Most songs are about love, heartache or relationships (and I love them). I thought it might be fun to list some songs that have nothing to do with love.

Diana, I remember as a kid complaining that everything on the easy-listening radio station that my mom always had on was nothing but yucky love songs. Fortunately I’ve expanded my repertoire considerably since then. There are hundreds I could choose from, but this one would probably rank near the top of my list:
-
David, Great song!! We really have a lot of the same musical tastes (cool). Did you go on your trip yet?
-
-
Hey, Diana! I’m leaving on the 18th and returning on the 26th. Depending on how busy I’m keeping, I might be a little less productive here in the club during that time.
I was just thinking of another way to interpret the “not about love” idea: how about songs that one might choose specifically to kill a romantic mood? In that case, this one would feature prominently in my playlist:
-
Hilarious!!! Can you imagine sitting at a romantic candle lit dinner with this playing?
-
Hi David, which song is it? Unfortunately I see only a black box with the note: Video not available.
-
Hey, Juergen! It’s Monty Python’s “Traffic Lights”. Here’s another posting of it:
-
Hey David, that video reminds me of a number of years ago when they introduced European style round-abouts in western Canada in favour of 4 way stop sign intersections. The 2 lane round abouts really confused the heck out of everyone as people got stuck in the round about not sure how to get out when traffic got busy!
Hope you have a great roadtrip to Seattle. I’m off on a small roadtrip into the interior myself on the 21st going over the big Coquihalla pass. It was more fun when I had my mustang, I could pass everyone, but now my little Kia can pass only semi trailers.
-
Have fun on your trip, Jung!
There are a couple of roundabouts on my college campus. They’re easy to navigate when there isn’t any other traffic around, but you really have to keep your head about you when it’s busy. And the difficulty is compounded when there are multiple lanes.
Not to divert the topic of this thread too much, but are you familiar with the diverging diamond interchange? I’ve been through a couple of them, and they take a little getting used to, but they really improve the flow of traffic where a busy surface street intersects with a freeway:
-
David, that Diverging Diamond Interchange is quite the traffic engineering feat. Good thing there are lane arrows to clearly mark the direction of travel. I am sure at the street level, it would look pretty obvious the direction of travel. I think in the not too distant future when self driving electric vehicles become the norm, none of this will matter much, except in certain instances when a pedestrian jumps out in front of the vehicle, and the computer has to decide whether to run into the tree saving the pedestrians life, or run over the pedestrian saving the vehicle occupants life.

Thanks David. This time it works. A real romance killer. Just the right thing to shorten an unwanted date quickly.

There are so many by Rush. In fact, precious few of their works consist of the typical love theme…I cannot even think of any at the moment. Neil Peart, who was the group’s lyricist, focused on profound, high-level concepts. Among my favorites are Limelight, New World Man, Subdivisions, Freewill, Losing It, and Tom Sawyer.
As the MonaLisa Twins mature and become more philosophical, they are focusing into introspective themes as well. Just look at Jump Ship. Very impressive, ladies!
-
Christopher, I wholeheartedly agree. I think Neil Peart was a brilliant lyricist. I’m a huge Rush fan and have seen them in concert several times. Just as I’m writing this, “Natural Science” comes to mind. Without looking up the lyrics….I’m thinking ” ….wheels within wheels in a spiral array… a pattern so grand and complex…time after time we lose sight of the way…our causes can’t see their effects”. I was also thinking of Rush when I heard “Jump Ship”.
The only “romantic” song I can think of is “In The Mood”

Hi Diana. Songs about love have to encompass one of the biggest topic to sing about. I think a song that expresses something about the human experience are always close to peoples hearts. Here is one of my favorites from Pink Floyd that’s not about love and relationships. Love the soaring guitar work. It’s a song inspired by a painful experience with stomach cramps Roger Waters endured during their 1977 tour. A doctor prescribed some kind of tranquilizer pain killer that relieved the pain and it kind of expresses that soothing experience when pain is relieved. Roger Waters said “it was the longest 2 hours of my life” of his stomach cramp experience. It’s quite an amazing song that captures that relief of a pain or burden lifted I think. Brilliant song writing. It’s in the realm of Dreams and Nothing Is In Vain the way it makes me feel like I am floating into the sky.

Hi Jung!
I’ve always loved that song along with “Hey You”. I didn’t know that interesting background about the song. I thought it was about heroin. I always learn so much from you. Thanks

David’s “Spinning Wheel” song reminded me of this one I like from John Lennon I use to hum a lot when this song first came out. An incredibly catchy melody.

Hi Diana, another song that come to mind is this one.
While car songs can come across as superficial and artistically light, this particular song for me is more than just about a car. It’s about that special thing in your life that is very sentimental, and gave you much joy and adventure like a well used baseball glove, guitar or piano that’s been a companion, a special pen or watch etc…
I remember back in 2002 when I went to pick up my new 2002 Mustang GT at the dealership, and I drove my run down 13 years old 1989 5.0L Mustang with 360,000 KM on the odometer into the parking lot to hand it over to the dealership as part of a trade in, I felt sad as I sat in the car and had one last look around, remembering all the life and fun adventures I experienced behind the wheel, all those endless wonderful miles of road trips, unsuspecting Camaros and Vettes I left in the dust at the light. I said good bye and thank you, gently petted the roof of the car as I walked away like saying goodbye to an old friend.
This song is about that feeling I had.
-
Great story! I always had crappy beat up cars that would break down. I think because of that PTSD, I became a leaser. I know people say that is financially unwise. It is one luxury that I allow myself to have. I get a new car every 3 years.

-
Hi Diana. You should have seen my very first car, the body consisted of more rust and plaster than metal. My brother use to worry if I got into a fender bender, the car would disintegrate to dust! ???? My sister always leased and drove around in nice new cars all the time that I envied. Leasing wouldn’t have worked for me because of the high mileage I put on, the mileage overage premiums would have made it unfeasible for me back then. I could now I think as I don’t drive insane distances like I use to. It’d be nice to lease one of these.
-
Well… for now … these ones come off top of my head … Rehab – Amy Winehouse … Goin Back- Dusty Springfield … Is There Life Out There- Reba McEntire , and many more but these are what I can think of at the moment …
-
Hello Diana,
even if this song is a bit weird: it is not a love song (at least this is what the title of the song claims). I have chosen a more relaxed cover version here for the MLT forum. The original by „Public Image Limited“ goes more in the direction of punk.
-
Hi Jurgen, I’ve been off the grid a lot lately. Once again, excellent choice. You always come up with great music!
