When I was young I listened to Jan and Dean, Beach Boys,…
https://youtu.be/sx8iMzdzUdsMy very first Girlfriend gave me Jan and Dean’s “Ride the Wild Surf” album for Christmas. It was puppy love on steroids.
Now I mostly listen to Mona and Lisa. Sometimes I like to listen to them when they were young. Sometimes their Beatle covers. Their album “When We’re Together.” Of course “Orange” and the Cavern Club album. A lot of times a mixture.
My favorite songs are:
“Close to You”
“Count on Me”
“When We’re Together”
“Sweet Lorraine”
…pretty much all of their original songs, and I like most of their covers better than the original version.-
Jerry,
I’m having fun conjuring up all these songs with everyone. However, I agree that MLT is my favorite group. I heard them say they were at the height of their Beatlemania phase around 14. Well, I’m on an MLT mania phase at 58 and it makes me feel like I’m 17 (young and alive)!!!Diana

Me three Diana, well said. I have the MLT-mania and they make me feel young and alive.

I think Jacki’s list is the definitive list of summer songs. Also, many many years ago there was this little garage band that covered the Grass Roots and the River Is Wide…..back when it was easier to hit high notes.,,,,,so it brought back a few memories. One that says summer to me was the music that was available during the summer of 1970. We had 8 tracks in the car back then and one 8 track that was released during the summer (or shortly before) was the Woodstock LP. So, CSNY Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Jimi and Purple Haze, Janis Joplin, the Who (See Me, Feel Me) all represent summer to me. Mike.

Hi Mike, here is a nice live performance of Judy Blue Eyes. Stephen Stills guitar work is awesome.

Wow, really enjoying everyone’s selections here! You are the bestest! 🙂
I’m with you there Jerry, once MLT do a classic cover, that is my go to version.
This one always feels like a summer song for me to listen to on a beautiful sunny day.

The only songs that definitively say summer to me is Beach Boys tunes (even Little Saint Nick!), but my Beach Boys list would be more like: “Wouldn’t it Be Nice”, “In My Room”, “Girls on The Beach”, and “Don’t Worry Baby”.
Buffalo Springfield “For what It’s Worth” is definitely summer to me along with “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison.
The rest of it is just kind of jumbled together with no other tunes that really cover summer Probably because a lot of the time was spent outdoors in places where there was no “good” radio stations.
I like Jacki’s list, except for “Summer of ’69”. I never did care for that tune probably because my Summer of ’69 consisted of two weeks between graduation and reporting for basic training.

Hi Jim, nice choices. Here is one of my faves from your list.

What the hell…..here’s another one. Not specifically summer in the title, but has the spirit of summer.
-
When the Raspberries came along they were to be the next Beatles and Badfinger, too. By 1975 both groups were basically gone. One group was tragically cut short and the other had the leader going solo. Oh well……we hoped for the best.
-
Michael,
Very interesting!! I didn’t know that about the Raspberries.

I don’t see it here but Tar Beach is a great addition.
Nice find David H.

Okay, no song list can get this long without me contributing something obscure by the Monkees. This one is from their 2016 album:
-
David,
I never heard this song. Love the retrieval from obscurity!!!

Here is another Drifters tune that is all summer, lazy mood. Has that “On The Rooftop” effect on me.
-
Another great one, Jung! No joke, the Drifters followed this up with a sound-alike sequel song called “I’ve Got Sand in My Shoes”.
I’m always running to Wikipedia to look for some interesting details to share. The clicking sound in Under the Boardwalk was made by a güiro, which is “a Latin American percussion instrument consisting of an open-ended, hollow gourd with parallel notches cut in one side. It is played by rubbing a stick or tines along the notches to produce a ratchet sound.”

Indeed, Jim, that’s a real forehead-slapping omission!
For completeness we could add to the list Wonderful Summer by Robin Ward.

One of my faves on Jacki’s list
