• Summer Rain

Summer Rain is such a magical song! The guitar work is brilliant, the vocals and harmony is brilliant, and the song writing show true music writing mastership I’ve come to expect from the likes of the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Simon and Garfunkle, Bob Dylan etc….

This past week Summer Rain has kind of become a theme song for me. Last Thursday got a call from my best friend who lives up in Logan Lake about a 2 hour drive in ranch country from Vancouver. The many wildfires in the area that has been threatening for weeks fanned by high winds quickly approached the little town of Logan Lake of about 2000 people. My friend Peter along with the townsfolk fled as the wall of fire approached within 2.5KM of the little town.

All the evacuees Logan Lake were directed to a bigger town of Merrit, where Peter was lucky enough to find lodging in an air conditioned hotel, and others found shelter in an emergency centre. On Saturday evening the news from Logan Lake was bleak as over 175 fire fighters from all over the province battled the massive flames with air bombers dropping fire retardents, and the local volunteer fire crew assembled sprinklers on homes at the edge of the town to prevent the huge embers from starting spot fires. I got a call from Peter that evening and he was absolutely in shock as he faced losing everything, his house and livelihood. At the same time the huge fire that was about to devour Logan Lake creeped down close to Merrit and the city of Merrit where Peter and residents of Logan Lake were sheltering went into Evacuation Alert.

Sunday morning I remember waking to the sounds of Summer Rain outside in Vancouver, and a little later I got a text message from Peter, and all it said was “Rain, Rain, Rain, It’s Raining!!!!”. I felt the beauty of rain and “Summer Rain” which played in my head for many days was absolute perfection. The joy I felt in the music became realized . The rain continued through Sunday into Monday throughout Logan Lake and Merrit, and by Tuesday the news out of Logan Lake was “Higher humidity and cooler temps made the fire situation in Logan Lake more stable. Crews are mopping up”. Logan Lake was saved by the rain, and of course the courageous efforts of those angels, otherwise known as firefighters.

Summer Rain for me is not only about the refreshing beauty of rain after a long drought, but also metaphoric about the balance the world needs restored. It’s such a brilliant song, and can’t wait for when it can be released to the whole world. The album I know is going to be absolutely awesome!

Mona and Lisa, may you take the world by storm with your music! Your talents deserve that.

Here are some photos of an air bomber flying over Peter’s house in Logan Lake on Saturday, and the condition of the highways around Logan Lake and Merrit over the weekend.

This is the Tremont Creek fire which is still a massive blaze, but Logan Lake for now is spared.

This is a photo from Logan Lake on Saturday night as the fire arrived in Logan Lake. This was taken from the volunteer fire station a few blocks from my friend Peter’s place which shows the ferocity of the fire as the night sky lit up. The satellite image was taken saturday morning. It could only be described as a monster.

Wow. What a story. We went through that same situation here in Oregon last year, and while we were able to come back home after evacuating, I know many people who weren’t as entire towns were wiped off the map. Too bad M&L didn’t release summer rain last year – a lot more might have been saved! LOL.

Here is a dramatic video clip of the fire bomber in Logan Lake Peter found on instagram. Apparently the person taking this video was standing on Peter’s front yard. We can recognize the branches from his apple tree.

Hi Roger, I remember the fires in Oregon. I was saddened to hear of the loss of Ashland OR, as I use to go through there all the time when I use to drive down to LA from Vancouver. I always made it a point to drive into the beautiful little town, and drink from that fountain too! I hope the town will be rebuilt and residents there are doing OK.

So a week later on Friday the evacuation order was downgraded to an alert, and residents of Logan Lake were allowed to return home. Asked my friend how it felt being back home and he just said “Like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz”. I know the feeling, when my eye sight returned after a scare with vision problems a few years ago. Suddenly everything around you looks, smells, and feels nicer and you feel like walking around with a little more bounce. It would be good to feel like that all the time.

A Summer Rain can bring that feeling back too!
