a friend mentioned to me that he was listening to a story about Sineed O’Conner. i mentioned to him that she did not write the song ” nothing compares to you”. that prince did. i told him that now a days people give credit for a good song to the singer and less to the songwriter. years ago it was different. people would say that was a cole porter song or a rogers and Hammerstein song. but with the advent of pop music the artist took center stage.
both of you are very talented in many ways. you both sing, play multiple instruments, compose music and perform live. you both have individual talents. lisa drew the cd cover and mona made a pallet planter(just joking). you both seem to know interesting people. who knew you know a guy who built a rocket ship in the basement.
i think the abilility to write music that people all over the world can enjoy , touching people you have no other contact with is a fantastic talent. my question is which of your talents are you most proud of or bring you the most satisfaction.

    p.s.
if you read this before your birthday HAPPY BIRTHDAY. thank you for your gifts.

    Hi John,

    Thanks for the birthday wishes!

You’re probably right that the “performer” these days gets much more credit and attention in popular music than the writers. In fact, I feel like music itself has almost become a secondary thing altogether and it’s much more about everything else surrounding many of today’s “stars” rather than the music itself. Maybe I’m being cynical but I think you’re very right when you said that the craft of songwriting was much more appreciated and focused on a few decades ago.

But to get to your question – personally, I think that the “talent” that has come in most handy for me throughout the years has been the willingness (ability?) to learn new things, adapt and grow with different challenges. Much of the “talent” part you see in videos and on record is grinding work and came over time and through determination, but the initial interest has always come very natural to me which I think would classify as a natural talent.

I guess creativity comes along with that naturally. We’ve found a way to channel our enthusiastic scatterbrains into a coherent project called MonaLisa Twins, not without the help of an incredibly supportive, hardworking and equally “talented” family 🙂

I hope that answers the question in a somewhat satisfactory way!

    Have a great week!
    Mona

Mona, I think a lot of groups out there today are more entertainers than artists, and some who do claim to create their own music just patch a bunch of regurgitated phrases and hooks that all sound the same and bland their producers are looking for and unfortunately the music industry seems to reward that more than the hard work of creating something truly original and inspired, doing the hard work like you do. You and your sister are true artists creating music worth listening to.

You are like the independent watch makers in their ateliers creating true works of art, but the industry is creating cheap and easy mass produced Timex’s these days. Fortunately there are a growing movement of people who appreciate good inspired music and want that back.

Back in mid 60’s so many artists were covering Bob Dylan’s songs that Columbia Records had a marketing campaign that read “Nobody does Dylan like Dylan”
