The MonaLisa Twins Do Dylan
Posted by Howard on 28/09/2019 at 21:12I have referred to Dylan covers in another post but feel Dylan deserves his own Topic. The Twins have done three Dylan covers to my knowledge. All included in their fabulous 2007 live concert – ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door’, ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ and ‘It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue’.
I know there is also at least one audio cover from a radio show (‘It Ain’t Me Babe’) and so there may be more audio covers somewhere.
There are many Dylan songs that deserve covering, but I am aware that not everyone is a fan of Dylan. “I love a lot of his songs, but only on the condition that he’s not the one singing them!” – This quote from David is probably reflective of how many of us feel. Consequently, I am using this Topic to explore Dylan covers that may be suitable for the MLT to cover.
I’ll kick off with the two covers they have already done so brilliantly in their 2007 concert video.
And my first vote goes to Manfred Mann. Perfect for Mona with both a flute and 12 string guitar.

This one for me Howard because it is one of the beautiful music moments in my memory singing it in my grade 5 music class.

While we are on the topic of Bob Dylan, he said some interesting things about where creativity and inspiration came for him. It was magic! I posted this in one of the other topics about creativity, but all the great artists like John Lennon as well say the same thing.

Speaking of Dylan, lol… And I agree… Love his songs just not him singing, his singing voice annoys me to no end… Lol… David hit the jackpot on that… Anyways, this new topic posting Howard started here, reminded me of this pub kinda place downtown Ottawa, well, the outside of it. I have a photo I took, awhile ago of it…. I’ll share photo here when I find it… Lol…. In the meantime, name of place is Pour Boy

Here’s a photo I took of the place:

‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ is a great pick, Jung. There are some Dylan songs that are actually best when Dylan sings them himself (ironically). However, how wonderful would it be to hear Mona and Lisa weave their own magic with this old classic that still holds up today!

Nice one Jacki. Thanks for sharing. Have you been inside? For some reason, I don’t imagine you as being a beer drinker, but wine or cider perhaps?
-
No Howard, I’ve not and you are correct… I Do Not drink any alcoholic beverages at all… Just my tea, Canada Dry/Schweppes Ginger Ale, Choco milk.

Jeff Buckley does a great, haunting cover of this song, but this old fart, firmly rooted in the sixties prefers the Manfred Mann version. Manfred Mann “Just Like A Woman” 1966 Video (dir John Crome).

“Blowin’ in the Wind” is probably my favorite Dylan song, although my preferred version is the cover by Peter, Paul and Mary because of the soaring harmonies that I’d like to see MLT match or top.
For similar reasons I’d suggest this one:

Rod Stewart – Forever Young (Official Video)

Wolfgang Ambros – “Wahre Liebe” (Love Minus Zero/No Limit)

Wow. I haven’t heard “Forever Young” in ages. Great song. I knew I was more familiar with another version so I searched and I think it was the Joan Baez version. I love her voice with this. Hearing Rod’s version my first thought was how Mona and Lisa’s voices would go with it. After hearing Joan’s version Ithink they could do an incredible version of this beloved song.
-
Well I’m with you on that one John as I too am more familiar with the Joan Baez version. Just tried Rod’s different version but Joan’s vocals more suited to the Twins.

This may be a little controversial for an MLT Club as it includes both religion and politics. A bit difficult not to with protest songs I guess.
With God on Our Side by Bob Dylan – from, ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ album, 1963
First release by Joan Baez (November 1963)
Manfred Mann – With God On Our Side

With all due respect Howard, I’m respecting Team MLT’s Guidelines about not to discuss religion or politics (even if it’s song related) and refraining from further replying to this particular posting.

Manfred Mann’s cover was a Britishised version of Dylan’s song and left out the Spanish American and civil wars, substituted free west for “midwest” and left out the verse on the Russians.
Sorry guys, this video comes with a warning – Bob himself is singing, and live!! LOL!
Bob Dylan- BBC Tonight Show – With God on Our Side (1964). This shows a very young Bob Dylan and also seems to cut the performance short.

And I respect your decision not to comment Jacki. I also chose not to comment (apart from advising that it may be a little controversial), out of respect for the MLT Club guidelines. Those guidelines don’t prevent members from sharing songs.
