The British Invasion continue with the likes of the Herman’s Hermit, and the Zombies with their first big hit song released in the US Dec 1964.

Thanks David for that Jan and Dean concert. Looks like they did some Beach Boys songs too, will watch the whole thing. Yes it’s so great to see Jan Berry back at it with his music with Dean Torrence like that.I think the Kinks, with their signature hard hitting melodic rock guitar sound would be precursors to many hard rock and heavy metal bands to follow, even the likes of AC DC.

It’s quite wonderful to know that some of these bands have had associations with MLT. Kinks, Zombies, Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits!

Ah, Gerry and the Pacemakers! I actually got into them via the Beatles. One of the first Beatle recordings I heard after being introduced to them in “A Hard Day’s Night” was their rendition of “How Do You Do It?”, which I absolutely loved. That song ultimately became a hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers, but George Martin gave it consideration as the Beatles’ first single in place of “Love Me Do”. I only found out much later that it was never officially released at the time.

I never knew that was originally a Beatles song, very charming. I’m not sure which version I like better, they both sound great. It’s good it became a big hit for Gerry and the Pacemaker. In the MLT Hamburg video I recall they played a short clip of this where they show Mona and Lisa photo of meeting Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Just to clarify, Jung, the Beatles didn’t write that song, although they were the first to record it. George Martin acquired it from songwriter Mitch Murray. He was also the producer for Gerry and the Pacemakers, and ultimately decided to offer their version for release.

Here is a delightful video from 1964 of a Variety Show that features the Beatles. Some funny skits and some awesome Beatles live performances. They are so good!!! Their cover of “Mr Postman” is an example of a song they made all their own! You can see John, Paul and George with their Rickenbacker 325, Hofner Bass 500/1, and Rickenbacker 360.

David, got it. Thanks for the clarification. -
That’s a very interesting variety show video, Jung. I can’t help but think that half of the audience was there just to see the Beatles, and the other half was there for the establishment song-and-dance numbers. There’s a pretty heavy contrast between those two elements.

David, the Beatles appearance on the show and their performance was really enjoyable. I’ve never seen this video before, looks like this archived video was posted earlier this year. It’s good to see the entire variety show with the regular musical act intact along with the Beatles as guests. All the Beatles looked pretty comfortable and natural playing along in the skits; Their charming personalities really shined through.  I’m sure most of the people who tuned into that program when it aired in 1964 were there for the Beatles. Their performance was really tight and sounded great! They were really polished, thanks to their 10,000 hrs of playing in Hamburg I bet. It’s great to see them do a couple of their songs MLT covered.

Here’s another Beatles rarity I came across recently that’s kind of a hoot:

This is hilarious David. It’s fun to see John, Paul, George, and Ringo in a comedy sketch like this. They looked like they had fun doing it. John’s outfits was the funniest. I think at one point he accidentally punched Paul in the lips. I can’t tell if there were any famous musicians in the background, but they were getting into it too.

Yes, great find David. Nineteen sixty four was a special year for me as it is the year I commenced High School, the year I started following the Rugby League team I’m still following today and the year I started to seriously get into music, and in particular, British Invasion ’beat’ music. And yes, I also started to notice the opposite sex a bit more. Interesting times indeed!
I think the video deserves a Topic of it’s own.
