Three Cool Cats
Posted by Jung Roe on 08/08/2022 at 08:44Today, August 8th 2022 is International Cat Day, so a tribute to all our furry friends. Give your furry friend an extra hug today.
I also found this interesting Beatles cover of a Coasters song “Three Cool Cats” that the Beatles recorded in 1962 for their Decca Records audition. This recording later appears in the Beatles Anthology 1 album in 1995. Apparently the Beatles also performed “Three Cool Cats” in some of their live sessions in 1969.
Spooky, Misty, and Milo were the Three Cool Cats in my life, I am so happy to have known.

Yay, cats! Nature’s physicists.
I was trying to think of a song that was about cats in the literal sense, but as often happens I had to go back to childhood. This is one of my favorites from grade school music class:

I once wrote an extra verse for this song, to address the elephant in the room:
As Don Gato stood, prepared to wed,
His beloved turned to him and said,
“Though I used to love you most now (meow, meow, meow),
You’re a creepy zombie ghost now (meow, meow, meow).”
And she jilted poor Don Gato.

Don Gato! We learned this song in Grade Three music class, except our song ended with the cemetery verse.
What a throw-back Thursday!

Thanks David, that was really cute and perfect for International Cat Day.
Sylvester is probably my fave cartoon cat character. Do you remember this one? Mice are big down under.
-
Oh yes, Jung. I recall several of those based on the premise that a baby kangaroo looks just like a giant mouse. No wonder I struggled in high school biology class.
-
Ah, I forgot about this one:
-
Hi Jung,
these swinging cats can’t be missing on International Cat Day ????:
-
This type of cat is not quite as cute, but it can sing beautifully:
-
Hi Jurgen. I remember the “Cats Musical” is quite famous, but never really knew much about it. This performance is quite beautiful and so are the human cats too. I can feel the appeal of this. Thanks for posting it.

Hi Jung,
I saw the musical Cats many years ago in Hamburg. The song „Memory“ is wonderful and also the idea to dress the actors as cats is very original. The dance performances were good as always, but I think Cats is maybe not the best musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I personally found The „Phantom of the Opera“ more impressive.
And of course we should not forget the XXL-Cats (or do they have their own National Day?):
-
Good one Jurgen, we can’t forget the Pink Panther. I love the Pink Panther movies with Inspector Clouseau. They are just too hilarious.

Oh yeah, the Aristocats! And then there’s this jazzy/bluesy cartoon cat combo:
-
I haven’t listened to “The Cure” for a long time. So it’s a good reason to let the Love Cats out.
-
This was big the year I graduated (1981)
-
Hi Diana,
you were definitely faster than me. I first thought of Love Cats and then I thought: Well next can follow the Stray Cats…????
…how about this?…
-
Jurgen,
You always show me new music! Never heard that one before, but sure takes me back.
-
Hey Diana, great video! I think I remember that one. A catchy tune, and great guitar work in there. Such strong 80s hair style.
-
-
Maybe not one of the best Kinks songs and what does the song want to tell us (?), well… Big cat-secret
-
Supposedly, the song by Pink Floyd refers to Syd Barrett’s Siamese cat Sam. But it is only a rumor I read. JP if you read this, maybe you are better informed, thanks.

I posted this once before, but here’s a very weird song that Micky Dolenz wrote about his cat:
-
I’m sure it’s coincidental, but the section of Make Show where they stay on the same note for a long time (starting at 2:54 in the video) bears a significant resemblance to a similar section of Shorty Blackwell (starting at 2:19).

David, Shorty Blackwell is delightful! The Monkeys (in this case Mickey Dolenz) never cease to impress. My first cat, Spooky, looked like Mickey Dolenz cat. He was a tough black alley cat, once broke my brother inlaw’s thumb while wrestling with him, but was always gentle with me, though I use to wrestle with him a lot. I had him for about 6 years from when I was 10 to 16 and we were inseparable.

Oh boy Jung, three things immediately come to mind:
1st: the record cover scares me
2nd: never heard of that
3rd: Ted Nugent who’s that guy?
PS: a little-known fact is that cats are extremely gifted piano players. Here, for example, Nora The Piano Cat at one of her concerts
