I think one of the best Kinks songs, this one when you hear it has the power to linger in your head all day. Song has such a wonderful driving raw guitar sound, that was very new when it first came out in the early 60s, giving the Kinks their highest chart topping hit eclipsing You Really Got Me, and All Day And All Of The Night. Watched this video today and Mona and Lisa did such justice to this song with the superb captivating guitar work on the Rickenbackers, and they made it all their own with their wonderful harmonies. Had to replay it several times tonight, I got so into it!

    Absolutely fantastic rock and roll!

Yes Jung, there are so many songs that are true catchy tunes. You can’t get them out of your head anymore. The Kinks had a knack for such songs. I’m also thinking of “All day and all of the night” or “Sunny Afternoon” Here’s another catchy cover song from Mona & Lisa (one of my absolute favorite videos; stylish & cool):

Jurgen, oh yeah, when I first saw this video, I thought it was one of the finest music videos I’ve ever seen encompassing all the videos going back to the early 80s. Superb musicianship, and Mona and Lisa are so adorable and irresistible in the video, so full of charm and humour! You can’t just act out or make up this kind of charisma, it comes naturally.

I don’t know why I’ve never seen this vid before! Both twins shine here, but Mona’s voice comes thru particularly strong and perfect for this song. Love the sound of dual Rickies! Hope to hear more in the future!

Hey Jeffery, yes indeed, Mona and Lisa does the Kinks such wonderful justice. They bring across the best aspects of the Kinks through their superb guitar work, and their vocals/harmonies add a rainbow of depth to the song like this and Lola and You Really Got Me, their rocker vocals are the best of the best.

Jung, I seldom use the phrase “You’re preachin’ to the choir!”, but it fits here. ????

Hi Jung, I don’t know if this topic is basically about the music of the Kinks or just about outstanding pieces of music. As far as the latter is concerned, I find the song „The House of the rising Sun“ by the animals very impressive. Eric Burdon was celebrated as a white blues singer and the use of the organ was something special for 1964. A song that is characterized by the memorable voice and the beautiful melody. I like to listen to the song again and again.

    Hi guys,

Jurgen, you brought up ‘House of The Risining Sun’. I was listening to an MLT playlist on YouTube recently. You know how they insert other groups sometimes? I discovered this Americana Folk band from Detroit doing a rendition of this song. Except they insert ‘Amazing Grace’ in the duet to the melody. I think it is better than ‘The Animals’. What do you think? Their name is Athens Creek.

Hi Diana, first of all thank you very much for the beautiful cover version of “The House of the rising sun”. Of course, the version of Athens Creek benefits first of all from the duet singing (and also from the tension between the female and the male voice). Also, the whole song has become more complex. I find the implementation on two acoustic guitars very successful and it sounds really great . The integration of „amazing grace“ is a wonderful idea (this makes it almost a new song in places). I really can’t say which of the two versions is better. The version of The Animals, on the other hand, sounds somehow “dirtier” and therefore fits quite well with the text. I also find the Hammond organ original. A very clear Draw, I would say. Thank you very much for posting the version of Athen Creek. I always find it exciting to get to know new bands, especially since I also love folk music very much.

Hi Jurgen, thanks for sharing the House Of The Rising Sun. No restrictions, all good music is welcome here! 🙂 This is one of the many 60s classics that stop me in my tracks when it use to come on the radio, along with others like Whiter Shade of Pale, Time of The Season etc…Whenever I hear this song, I have to revert also to MLTs version from 2007; their 14 years old vocals give this song a unique and refreshing character that make it very worthy. And what a treat to hear Michaela on the Saxophone. Awesome.

Hi Diana, nice cover of the song by Athens Creek, I especially like the classical guitar they added to it. You have a knack of finding some great groups, thanks!

As a new MLT Club member I am discovering gems such as this which aren’t featured on YouTube. Takes me back to my youth when I used to play the Flock version at my youth club (I only had half a dozen records for the disco – but there were initially only four people who came. Eventually we expanded the record collection and ended up with 150 people for a room half the size of the Cavern).

Only recently discovered this was originally by the Kinks – thought it was the Zombies! But prefer the Mona Lisa version by far.

Now off to explore more MLT Jukebox!

    Hi Nicholas

Have you checked out the Out & About section? There is a lot of groovy “Junk” here. Also, check out “Junk” in the Duo Sessions.
