Endless Summer was the first, and until just a few years ago the only, Beach Boys album I ever had.  Virtually every early hit song in a single two-album compilation.  I could just listen to it over and over!

Graham, do you know about a British group from the 60’s called Tony Rivers and the Castaways, and later called Harmony Grass?  They wrote some songs with a very strong Brian Wilson influence.  You can check out their album “This Is Us” (as Harmony Grass) on YouTube.  A free sample:

Graham, I got the Light Album and the one after that Keeping The Summer Alive and that was it, I think that was the last album before Dennis Wilson died.  But that 15 Big Ones might have been my first or second Beach Boys album.  I thought it was just wonderful with all those early 60 and 50s remake songs, loved that album.  It was the doorway to the pre-Beach Boys and Pre-Beatles rock music for me.  It introduced me to Chuck Berry and others with Rock and Roll Music, Blueberry Hill, Chapel of Love, Back Home, In The Still of The Night, Palisades Park, Susie Cincinnati etc.  I did eventually look up the original versions, but none could hold a candle to the Beach Boys versions of those for me.

Here is one from that album:

David, I remember you mentioned Harmony Grass to me a while back. They are great! Endless Summer, although a compilation album was one of their big #1 albums actually and earned a lot of recognition.   Rolling Stones recommend it as one of the top 4 must have Beach Boys albums.  It not only has all their big hits, but also some lesser known gems from the albums too.  That’s why it’s so great.

Bill, I think Sticky Fingers was the Rolling Stones album my brother had.  Brown Sugar and Wild Horses are among my fave stones tunes.

Love how the audience goes wild when the opening guitar riffs of this one starts.

Just to add to the Kinks must have albums in addition to the 4 Joe already mentioned (To the Bone, Misfits, Low Budget, Word of Mouth) my vote would be their 1966 Greatest Hits compilation album.  It’s the only Kinks album I owned so my Kinks contribution is limited to one, but I thought it was great.  Captures their early sound with those raw melodic guitar riffs ie Your Really Got Me, Tired of Waiting, All Day All Of The Night, Til The End Of The Day, A Well Respected Man etc..

    Kinks greatest hits

Hey Joe, thanks for reposting Set Me Free for me.  Love the opening guitar riff on that song, as well as on Til The End of The Day.  I haven’t heard Picture Book before, but it’s really nice.  Will have to pull up those 4 Kinks albums on Youtube and have a listen to them all.

Hey Jung, You might have heard Picture Book without even knowing. Can’t remember who

HP, Dell maybe even Kodak used that song on one of their commercials on TV for a photo printer.  Definitely  listen to those four cd’s if you can. My favorite one is To The Bone. It’s a two cd set of live material. It’s one of the best live cd’s I ever heard.  Yea Dave Davies is a really a great guitar player. He has done some great riffs of rock and roll.

Hey Joe, interesting story about Picture Book and its use in the commercials.  I’ll start with that live album To The Bone.  My very favourite Kinks song would have to be Tired Of Waiting.  Love those raw melodic guitar sounds.  MLTs version is brilliant, was so absolutely thrilled when they covered it.

Here is a live Kinks performance.

    Hey Jung ,

Good morning, Thanks for the video. The Kinks are one of those bands that sound good live and in studio. The MLT do the Kinks really good. Would love to hear them do some more.

Now does anyone want to take a crack at the 4 must have albums of the Beatles?

With my somewhat limited exposure to their album side, I would throw in Rubber Soul because it was the start of the Beatles studio pioneering into new musical frontiers stage, though arguably some of it already started with Help.  It would be the album that would be a precursor to it’s sister album Revolver (considered by some as one of the greatest albums of all time), as well as set off a chain reaction of creativity that would give birth to monumental albums Pet Sounds and Sargent Peppers.  It all started with Rubber Soul.

Then I would suggest Sargent Peppers because it is touted to be the greatest album of all time.  Just for the curious who might wonder what is so great about it, I would recommend this.

Then because of my memorable high school Biology field trip Beatlemania moment, the Red and Blue Beatles albums.   🙂

In Rubber Soul there are songs with a lot of deep cutting emotion and passion.  Perhaps that’s why it’s so great.  So many big hits from this album.  George Harrison said it well about Norwegian Wood, he could feel where the song was coming from.  Here are a couple songs with a lot of emotions, and awesome guitar sounds.

What a track to end the album on.  One of George Harrisons favorite songs, and apparently many Beatles fans feel it’s one of the best tracks on the album according to some Beatles experts.  The dark lyrics are inspired by an Elvis song according to John Lennon.  I love the great guitar sounds and that catchy tune.  Like the witty “that’s the endddd”.
