I Bought Myself A Politician – Lyrics

I Bought Myself A Politician

I bought myself a politician
Cause I have never said I’d play it fair
They’re currently on sale
Just picked them up from Yale
They’re even cheaper if you take a pair

And on a whim I also bought the opposition
It’s better to be safe, you never know
And then for even less
I also bought the press
To wrap it up and I was good to go

Who would have thought that no one dared to stop me on my joyride
(Oh what a joyride)
Who would have thought that I could bring the whole world to its knees
And now the time has come to buy my way into the limelight

(just got the time right)
As universal scientist and generous philanthropist
my shopping list confirms my expertise

I bought myself a politician
Cause I have never said I’ll play it fair
If they are not on sale
I pick them up from jail
It doesn’t hurt to have a few to spare

Who would have thought that no one dared to stop me on my joyride
(Oh what a joyride)
Who would have thought that I could bring the whole world to its knees
And now the time has come to buy my way into the limelight
(so I can shine bright)
As universal scientist and generous philanthropist
my shopping list confirms my expertise

If you look closely you can see I’m on a mission
There’s something that I really wanna do
I’m promising you health
I’ll save you from yourself
That’s how I’m gonna try
To get you to comply
Might even have to lie so that you will let me buy you too

  1. Absolutely amazing song!!!!
As a new fan at the ripe old age (ha!) of 56, I’m so tickled to have seen/heard this for my first MLT exposure. Great talent!

  2. My favourite song though it is hard to choose as so many songs from MLT are excellent but this has humour and a tongue in cheek statement about politics that just tickles me and the video is the icing on the cake.

  3. Everything about this is so very good. The lyrics, song and video. Very laid back but so vivid and showing the way as the 60’s artists did. I doesn’t get any better than this

  4. Among your originals, this is my favorite so far. A joy to listen to, to watch, and to connect with the crazy world we live in. I especially enjoyed it today after watching the theatrics of the U.S. House of Representatives trying (for the third day) to elect a Speaker of the House.

  5. Politician is one of my favorite songs on the album.
The melody and lyrics are really great. Also, the video is clever, entertaining, and so well done. I Love It!

  6. This song is a masterpiece! It is deliciously cynical and describes accurately what our poor world is living now. You truly are geniuses! I admire you !

  7. I love this song as well as Songbird” from your upcoming album. Your music is such a refreshing change to modern music. Your talent, creativity and originality never cease to amaze me.

  8. Excellent lyrics and song. Catchy as well and definitely suited to the times we are in today. The video was great as well with the inventive angles and flow….. Very 60’s.

  9. This is the first that I’ve heard of you: I like the theatrics and your on target message. I also appreciate being able to see the lyrics to help me understand this song better. Thank you!

  10. “My Shopping list confirms my expertise” such a prefect line. The whole song is genius. No hyperbole. Music is wonderful too. Instant classic. ????????

  11. I Bought Myself A Politician should become an anthem or at least a theme for the comming
World War between the sane and the insane.

  12. I have no words to describe how I am satisfied with this song and the video.
Simply amazing, really outstanding!! The video is a fine piece of art, indeed!
And I can’t stop listening to this song!!!

    🙂

  13. This song took me back to the sixties (that’s the sisters’ goal, isn’t it?). I saw in it the harsh irony of ‘I’m the Taxman’ navigating on the beat of ‘Your mother should know’. The Beatles influence is clear and wonderfully flavorful, the video is perfect and you can enter it for the next Grammy Awards. Keep up with your beautiful work!

  14. As a new listener still catching up on your background, I must say that this song fits your brand very well. I enjoy the music style and the hook is set right from the start. Your lyrics are both whimsical yet troubling because they are not far from the truth. Keep having fun! Seeing your happiness and smiling faces are an addictive habit we all need during these times.

  15. I don’t like politicians too, but I’m sorry to say that I don’t like this song either.
It is a very rare case for me to not like one of your songs, becaue in general I love your music and style very much, as a club member and a big fan.
But, I must say that this song is not so enjoyable to listen to, and may be skipped by me when listening to the whole LP.
The other two songs you released so far (janitor Joe and Summer rain) are great and lovely.

  16. Such a fantastic song for the times! Wow, I just love the lyrics. They are so well placed to make the point so clear. Instrumentation and vocals is top notch but it’s just what we expect from MLT. It is satire at it’s best.

  17. Hi Mona, Hi Lisa.. another great song in this sea of purely commercial and repetitive songs, many of them made by computer programs.. Your song is fun and satirical with a touch of the 30s or 40s.. maybe “boogie woogie” more slow… mixed with blues .. Iloved it .. thanks for posting the lyrics .. now i understand everything, and there is nothing more to add to the definition of a politician.. by the way .. I want to thank you for being the inspiration for me to try to learn English again., Stay groovy and safe dear and precious girls. Thanks.. for all..

  18. These lyrics are just so incredibly inspired and brilliant! It’s so poetic, and witty, from a couple of really insightful minds! I’m just so overly impressed by you both, not only for your incredible musical talent all these years, but bright thoughtful courageous thinkers you both are! You are like the great 60s musical legends in so many profound ways! McCartney, Lennon, Dylan, Townsend, Sebastian, Davies, Donovan etc would all be so proud. Kindred spirits. Kudos!

  19. This is great! I love the backing vocals,”just got the time right”. ???? I love the bluesy guitar. The solo sounds really classic. Mona’s drums sound very unique. I like the fill at the end of each verse.

I also like how the lyrics can be interpreted anyway the listener chooses, and it fits their side. Very clever.

I agree with Jeffery. One of the many qualities we love about you two is that your annunciation is so clear that some of us have actually realized we have been singing a lyric wrong for forty years. ???? So thanks for that.

Oh, and I love the currency background you created. I think it would be perfect printed on a 45’ record sleeve. Would this be the B side to Janitor Joe, or vice versa?

    JP

  20. Thanks, Ladies! So nice to have the lyrics to read thru, even though you annunciate perfectly clearly. I will admit I thought you were possibly buying a physician instead of the opposition, but had it right until I started doubting my ears’ perception. Sure didn’t think you’d post a make-up double post today. I think you know we’d have forgiven you for skipping a post or two after taxing yourselves as you did in the Welsh mountains! Besides, you posted your marathon pics last Tuesday, so we actually got a bonus post! Stay groovy, and try to relax a bit!
