I have eaten at the Ponderosa Steakhouse a few times, if that’s worth any partial credit.
Once as a kid my siblings and I were watching TV, and one of Lorne Greene’s Alpo commercials came on. When it ended, my four-year-old sister said very matter-of-factly, “When I grow up to be a dog, I will eat some Alpo.” We had a long talk.

That one could go on the animal song thread too!
Jung, you made me think of this Willie Nelson song. Lots of people have recorded it, so I just picked my favorite vocalist among them:

Not to worry, Jacki. We all have little mental blocks and crossed wires about various details of things. I always find myself talking about episodes of magazines and issues of TV shows.

I think we had this exchange once before, Jacki, but are you talking about “Four Strong Winds” rather than “Blowin’ in the Wind”? I can’t find an Ian and Sylvia recording of the latter.

I’m firmly in Jacki’s camp on this one: I’d rather hear a cat being strangled than listen to Dylan’s affected singing voice. But I’ll agree with Joe that both are more pleasant than Yoko.
That being said, I have to acknowledge his genius as a songwriter, and this is coming from someone who seldom pays attention to lyrics. So many of the tunes he wrote sound wonderful when performed in multi-part harmony. I’d put Peter, Paul & Mary’s rendition of “Blowin’ in the Wind” at the top of the list, followed by the Seekers’ recording of “The Times They Are a-Changin'”.

And it’s consistent with the animal theme of this topic.

Member14/08/2020 at 16:15 in reply to: Famous songs with reference to pets or animalsWhen I hear Lorne Greene’s voice I think of two things: Battlestar Galactica and Alpo dog food.
To this day I’ve never watched Bonanza, thanks to a traumatic (or so it seemed at the time) early childhood experience of a babysitter insisting on watching Bonanza during the sacred Sesame Street time slot.

Member14/08/2020 at 07:10 in reply to: Famous songs with reference to pets or animalsFrom what I can tell, the Clingers’ fame came primarily from their appearances on TV variety shows (Danny Kaye, Glen Campbell, the Smothers Brothers), and they never found much success on the music charts.
